FMDRS 3-6 - Federal-Mogul Dragster Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Dave Gerard

INDIANAPOLIS - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the NHRA Division 3 Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series Final listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Russ Lindert Runs 5.522/249.58, Now #4; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Shawn Bowen Runs 5.777/248.00, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.733/251.04, Was #7

2:10PM It's getting darker now and the wind is picking up. Lindert marches away to the finish line and into the number 4 spot for now. Bowen drops a cylinder, pumps it, and runs on down, to almost match his number for yesterday.

Left Lane: Dave Weber Runs 5.862/233.10, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.140/171.49, Was #15
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.536/260.71, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.455/256.41, Was #2

Weber is away first and picks up a ton, but won't make the top 8 in this session. Reichert fights dropped cylinders and can't improve his ET. He runs a better MPH for his efforts.

Left Lane: Phil Mass Runs 5.650/247.59, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.650/247.59, Was #6
Right Lane: Tim Rudy Runs 11.632/72.79, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.908/213.21, Was #13

Mass has problems getting it into reverse after the burnout. He is pushed back and stages right away. He leaves hard and runs well to the lights. There is a big flash and bang from the blower. Rudy leaves with Mass and has problems right away. He clicks it and coasts to the finish line.

We are down for clean up.

2:24 PMThings have now gone down hill. They were ready to start the next pair and it's started to lightly rain.

*** 1:30PM Sunday: The qualifying session was called for Saturday, as the rain was not going to let up. We are back now on Sunday morning to finish the last session. Today we will start with any dragster that has not made a pass yet and then the slowest to quickest non-qualifiers will run. If anyone bumps into the 5.733 field, the Saturday qualifiers will have the opportunity to bump back in to the field or improve their position. Otherwise, the field will be set for first round.

Left Lane: Brian Badgett No Time, Now #19; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Tony Zizzo Sr No Time, Now #20; No Prior Run

1:32 PM The engines come to life for the unqualified dragsters. Not a great start for the session. Both cars do their burn outs together and then can't find reverse together! They have to shut off and their tow trucks go down to retrieve them.

Left Lane: Tim Rudy Runs 7.044/207.99, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.908/213.21, Was #13
Right Lane: Timothy Bowgren Runs 6.247/215.72, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.146/222.11, Was #16

Let's try this again! Rudy does a ten foot burnout and then makes up for it with a cloud of tire smoke at the hit. Bowgren runs cleanly to the finish, but can't improve.

Right Lane: Mick Snyder Runs 8.757/101.75, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.956/240.89, Was #15

Right lane single. Snyder leaves with low RPM and picks up the front wheels. The car makes a move toward the guard rail and he has to shut it down.

Right Lane: Jared Dreher Runs 5.836/239.48, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.898/235.72, Was #12

Another right lane single, based on prior runs and qualifying position. Dreher makes a career best attempt with the front wheels in the air on the launch. He has a little wiggle near mid-track. Clean run, but not enough for today.

Right Lane: Robin Samsel Runs 15.614/44.26, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.770/234.74, Was #10

Samsel hits the throttle and the car doesn't react. He coasts to the finish line to close out the qualifying session for the event. The rest of the qualified dragsters go back to their trailers to prepare for round one.
