INDIANAPOLIS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the NHRA Division 3 Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series Final listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Shawn Bowen Runs 5.733/251.04, Now #2
Right Lane: Ben Mayshall Runs 5.611/257.51, Now #1
5:06 PM I would not have guessed this morning when I opened the drapes in the motel that we would be doing this today. Mother Nature has smiled on Indy! It's cool and there are still some dark clouds overhead. The Comp. session was fast, so let's see that the big dogs can do! Marshall drops some cylinders off the line, but picks up on the top end. Bowen was away first and is also plagued with dropped cylinders.
Left Lane: Jeff Bohr Runs 5.651/247.93, Now #2
Right Lane: Dave Weber Runs 6.140/171.49, Now #4
Bohr is away first and runs cleanly to the finish line. Weber is slow and loses the blower belt near the 900 foot mark.
Left Lane: Timothy Bowgren Runs 6.146/222.11, Now #6
Right Lane: Randy Bayne Runs 5.754/245.36, Now #4
Bowgren makes a good start and clicks it down track. Bayne makes a clean pass into the current number 4 position.
Left Lane: Tim Rudy Runs 5.908/213.21, Now #5
Right Lane: Chris Ricketts Runs 5.951/249.86, Now #6
Lots of dropped cylinders! Both cars make a cloud of fuel going down the track.
Left Lane: Jared Dreher No Time, Now #9
Right Lane: Dave Hirata No Time, Now #10
Hirata has a big bang at the end of the burn out. He hits it again and runs on down the track and stops right after the lights. Dreher completes his burnout and backs up to the line. The starter waits, but Hirata is in a bad spot and they shut Dreher off. He'll get to come back later.
Left Lane: Robin Samsel Runs 5.770/234.74, Now #5
Right Lane: Bob Ginther Runs 15.303/46.54, Now #10
Samsel does the traditional cloud of fuel in the light, but fairs better than Ginther. At the hit, Ginther starts to smoke the tires. He stays with it and makes a move toward the wall. He wisely clicks it off.
Left Lane: Mick Snyder Runs 5.956/240.89, Now #9
Right Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 5.505/245.76, Now #1
I am a little surprised to see the Bud car here. The announcer reminds me that Dad's shop is here in town. Bang! Good numbers all the way down the track. Snyder has a lot of tire shake and drives through it. However, it won't be good enough for this session.
Left Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.455/256.41, Now #1
Right Lane: Phil Mass Runs 5.675/254.74, Now #5
Two good runs. Reichert is no match for Mass and jumps up to the number one spot. Keeping all the cylinders lite makes a big difference!
Left Lane: Keith Stark Runs 5.361/270.18, Now #1
Stark will run by himself in the left lane. The bump is a 5.770 right now, quickest this year for the division. Stark makes a beautiful pass. The header flame are over the wing in the evening light. He runs a new best for the division.
Left Lane: Jared Dreher Runs 5.898/235.72, Now #10
The bump is 5.754 now. Dreher is back for another attempt. Dreher pulls up the front wheels and makes a strong pass. Unfortunately, it's only good enough in this fast crowd for the number 10 spot. That wraps up the first session of FMD with sixteen dragsters. There is only a less than .4 seconds from 1 to 8. If the weather holds, they will get two more chances tomorrow.
