FMDRS 4-6 - Federal-Mogul Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Bob Orme

NOBLE, Okla. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the NHRA Division 4 Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series Finale listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Michael Bowers Runs 6.362/222.33, Now #7; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Nick Copeland II Runs 6.672/156.68, Now #8; No Prior Run

Bowers' engine sounded strange on the burnout. It didn't look like he got the car up to full power on this pass. Copeland had smoke coming from the headers almost all the way down the track.

Left Lane: Karl Brounkowski Runs 6.553/161.40, Now #9; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Lee Callaway Runs 5.975/234.43, Now #6; No Prior Run

Brounkowski had a smooth pass going until he reach the 330-foot cones. The engine starting mixing up the cylinders and he was on and off the throttle a couple times before he gave up.

Left Lane: Jeff Hamelink No Time, Now #13; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Rick Santos No Time, Now #14; No Prior Run

Something happened with the track timing system, and neither driver was timed on this pass. They will both be given an opportunity to make another pass before the final qualifying round.

Left Lane: Gene Snow Runs 5.697/252.52, Now #3; No Prior Run
Right Lane: James Thompson Runs 5.826/246.10, Now #5; No Prior Run

Snow left a little soft but still had a decent run here. There were no apparent problems for Thompson.

Left Lane: Brian Ratliff Runs 5.908/239.29, Now #8; Best prior run: 8.021/115.39, Was #13
Right Lane: Larry Traugott Runs 5.768/241.74, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.892/237.96, Was #7

Ratliff drifted toward the retaining wall in the middle section of the track. That puts him on the bump spot, but it probably won't hold up.

Left Lane: Kent Nuckols Runs 5.707/249.37, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.832/245.76, Was #7
Right Lane: Bruce Bowler Runs 5.480/255.39, Now #1; No Prior Run

No problems for either driver, Bowler keeping all the candles lit on his injected nitro machine.

Left Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 5.673/248.41, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.814/244.76, Was #7
Right Lane: Larry Becktold Runs 6.474/212.76, Now #13; No Prior Run

Bradshaw was loose between 300 feet and half track, the car moving around in his lane. The were no apparent problems for Becktold, but something wasn't working right.

Left Lane: Randy Meyer Runs 19.967/35.08, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.082/216.03, Was #11
Right Lane: Jay Meyer Runs 5.554/250.20, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.693/249.79, Was #4

Randy Meyer's burnout wasn't really a burnout, he didn't heat up the tires at all. He ended up doing a real burnout on the launch and shut it down at 100 feet.

Left Lane: Shelly Howard Runs 5.620/252.17, Now #4; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Mark Hentges Runs 5.467/260.11, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.579/258.91, Was #3

Both drivers are in points battles this weekend, Howard looking to clinch the Division 4 title and Hentges in contention for the National title. Both drivers make it down the track smooth and clean.

Left Lane: Troy Buff Runs 5.645/254.23, Now #5; No Prior Run

Buff ends the round on a trouble-free solo pass.
