Left Lane: Don Sosenka Runs 5.602/261.52, Now #15; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Scott Weis Runs 6.093/152.87, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.178/280.60, Was #11
2:35 PM and the Funny Cars are in the lanes for their third round of qualifying. Sosenka moves the "Mr Magoo" car into the field for now, on a pass that had the motor laboring all the way down the track. Weis tossed the blower belt at half tra ck, slowing him down on the top end.
Left Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 9.874/88.54, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.148/279.27, Was #7
Right Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 5.223/262.95, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.505/193.65, Was #14
Skuza lost traction at 300' and has to click it off. Toliver's car started skating around at mid track, dropping cylinders through the traps, but the pass did move him up in position.
Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 5.246/291.57, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.907/127.35, Was #19
Right Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 5.378/257.09, Now #15; Best prior run: 13.604/88.17, Was #21
Both drivers improve enough to get them into the field for now, Gilbertson pedaling at half track, and Creasy trailing smoke from 1000' on down.
Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 10.177/97.79, Now #21; Best prior run: 7.325/146.89, Was #20
Right Lane: Jack Wyatt Runs 5.498/289.14, Now #17; Best prior run: 12.474/72.01, Was #21
Boths cars striking the tires at 200', Wilkerson abandoning the run and Wyatt pedaling through it. Wyatt gave it a game effort, but he's still not in the show.
Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 9.347/87.36, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.224/207.56, Was #13
Right Lane: Jim Epler Runs 5.120/293.79, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.236/146.94, Was #20
Capp was up in smoke at 200' and made a failed attempt to pedal through it. Epler leaps into the top half of the field with a problem-free pass.
Left Lane: Kenny Sayers Runs 6.510/147.07, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.175/291.95, Was #11
Right Lane: Cory Lee Runs 5.510/210.37, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.425/226.39, Was #17
Both cars were moving around in their lanes, Sayers off the throttle by 1000' and Lee trying to get the car back in the groove at the top end.
Left Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 5.130/284.27, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.160/292.65, Was #10
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 5.106/286.62, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.628/253.66, Was #20
Both drivers improve here, with the only visible sign of any problem being Densham's trailing smoke through the traps.
Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 5.554/186.25, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.935/314.46, Was #3
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 8.123/99.94, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.153/275.73, Was #11
Worsham got almost sideways at half track, he had to get off the throttle to gather the car in. Johnson's car began to slow down at around 1000' for no apparent reason.
Left Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 4.964/311.63, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.934/304.32, Was #2
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.387/228.15, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.142/227.08, Was #9
Bazemore runs the car right down Broadway, while Pedregon hazes the tires at half track and gets close to the wall on the top end.
Left Lane: John Force Runs 7.295/117.21, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.811/321.12, Was #1
Force lost traction at 400' and gets off the throttle. After three rounds of Funny Car qualifying, John Force retains the pole position with a 4.811 ET and Bob Gilbertson sits on the bump with a 5.246 ET. The weather is looking good at this ti me, so we should be able to get a fourth round in this afternoon.
