BAYTOWN, Texas - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 3rd annual Matco Tools SuperNationals presented by Racing Champions listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.981/197.13, Now #1
Right Lane: Brad Klein Runs 7.078/195.73, Now #2
1:57 PM Time for the "factory hotrods" to do their thing for the first time this weekend. The track records in Pro Stock are 6.874 seconds and 201.11 mph, both by Warren Johnson. Nice opening shot by "Tricky Rickie" right out of the box.
Left Lane: Don Beverley Runs 7.018/196.37, Now #2
Right Lane: Victor De La Garza Runs 7.079/196.19, Now #4
De La Garza's car was fishtailing during much of the run.
Left Lane: Jamie Yates Runs 7.037/195.48, Now #3
Right Lane: Joe Lepone, Jr. Runs 14.395/105.16, Now #6
This round is starting off like a time warp, with Beverley and Lepone and Smith and the younger Yates all "names from the past." Lepone's car launched and then almost stopped, almost looking like it came out of gear.
Left Lane: Randy Jones Runs 7.022/196.47, Now #4
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.955/199.17, Now #1
The newfound Reher-Morrison horsepower comes through for Allen once again.
Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.914/199.79, Now #1
Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.929/198.88, Now #2
Two surprisingly good runs here, both drivers struggling recently.
Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.933/199.35, Now #3
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 7.023/198.79, Now #8
KJ's handling problems are not behind him, the car all over the first part of the lane on this run. Must be the "hopgoblins."
Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.964/197.91, Now #5
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.992/197.68, Now #7
Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.968/198.23, Now #6
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.023/196.76, Now #12
Morgan's car also swam its way up the lane, killing the ET.
Left Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 7.005/197.59, Now #10
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.950/199.02, Now #4
Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.947/198.29, Now #4
JOhnson made a solo pass since this was the first pass on the car since a crash during testing at the Motorplex last Monday. Looks like they got everything straightened out okay, the car quick and smooth on a straight pass.
Left Lane: Gary Wiggins Runs 6.996/197.22, Now #12
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.960/198.26, Now #7
Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.931/198.61, Now #3

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 7.043/197.59, Now #21
Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.900/200.38, Now #1
Martino shows that his performance at Dallas last weekend was no fluke.
Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.935/198.88, Now #7
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.903/199.79, Now #2
The battle of the mail order houses goes to Pawuk by a few hundredths of a second.
Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 7.148/196.27, Now #27
Right Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 7.073/196.87, Now #24
Left Lane: Tony Gillig Runs 6.979/198.52, Now #14
Right Lane: Mike Trumble No Time, Now #31
Trumble's car got up on the tires, shook hard, then shuddered to a stop, something broken. The bump is now a 6.992, Greg Anderson's ET.
Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.945/200.77, Now #8
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.955/198.50, Now #12
Now the bump is Tony Gillig's 6.979. WJ got off to a sluggish start, a 1.055 60-foot time, almost 0.03 seconds slower than the top runners today.
Right Lane: Ray Franks Runs 6.965/197.83, Now #15
Franks squeaks in, making the bump Alderman's 6.968.
