By Ed Dykes

ENNIS, Texas - Results of round 2 eliminations in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the 14th annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec:

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   4 Cy Chesterman 5.695 254.74 Q 5 Chuck Cheeseman 5.715 250.00
   (R Fleming ) 0.467 5.648 254.52 E1 (L Miner ) 0.525 5.784 246.44
                  0.443 7.228 130.34 E2 *****WINNER***** 0.461 5.761 249.23
These two were pretty close thru the 330' mark, but by the eighth-mile Cheeseman was ahead by over two tenths, after Chesterman lifted and coasted the last 700' or so.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   8 Steve Harker 5.738 250.83 Q 16 Jimmy Jones 5.842 244.10
   (J Weaver ) 0.458 5.727 251.25 E1 (V Moats ) 0.427 5.801 244.63
                  0.462 5.933 250.06 E2 *****WINNER***** 0.477 5.730 247.79
The Texan sends the Aussie packing, Harker out of the groove and shaking early in the run. That gives Jones lane choice over Cheeseman, too.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   2 Pat Austin 5.694 253.02 Q 10 Steve Gasparrelli 5.777 250.34
   (P Swayne ) 0.441 5.678 251.25 E1 (M White ) 0.487 5.807 246.23
 *****WINNER***** 0.447 5.680 251.88 E2 0.490 6.707 156.71
Austin's car was so smooth it looked like he was out for a Sunday drive... wait, that's exactly what he was doing.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  11 Frank Manzo 5.787 252.88 Q 3 Paul Gill 5.695 255.10
   (J Payne ) 0.432 5.707 253.09 E1 (F Monaghan ) 0.485 5.776 254.23
                  0.443 10.607 80.38 E2 *****WINNER***** 0.458 5.684 255.39
Manzo's engine didn't sound right when he brought the revs up, and that may have made the difference as the tires went square almost as soon as he dropped the clutch. Regardless of what caused it, the end result is that Gill advances and the Kendall car heads back to Jersey.
