MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 12th annual AutoZone Nationals presented by Pennzoil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and
position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 7.030/194.35, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.047/194.69, Was #22
Right Lane: Lewis Worden Runs 7.688/137.67, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.011/195.62, Was #13
11:32 AM The final qualifying session for Pro Stock opens with Steve Schmidt on the bubble at 7.027. The weather is better than it's been all weekend for these normally-aspirated cars, so throw away the form sheets and start over. Worden's car skated all over and he gave it up. Alderman also skated around a lot, though not as much as Worden, and came up short of the bump time.
Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.963/196.82, Now #4; Best prior run: 7.035/196.36, Was #20
Right Lane: Ray Franks Runs 7.055/19.84, Now #21; Best prior run: 7.038/196.10, Was #21
Nice pass by Marnell, the car a bit loose on the launch, but then right down the groove. Franks was all over the lane on the top end, the rear of the car twitching back and forth.
Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.937/196.76, Now #2; Best prior run: 7.005/195.31, Was #11
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.186/193.99, Now #28; Best prior run: 7.320/186.30, Was #29
Gaines' car just didn't go anywhere, slow from the drop of the hammer. Nice run by Stevens, the car smooth and straight down the groove.
Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.935/198.44, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.955/197.51, Was #3
Right Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 7.065/196.42, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.044/195.70, Was #22
Tom Martino is now on the bump, at 7.026, by the way. Nice pass by Troy to take second place away from Stevens. Blakeney makes another good run, but is eons away from the bump time.
Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.985/196.70, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.030/195.68, Was #18
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.939/198.23, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.975/197.39, Was #7
Two nice passes here, Anderson bumping Martino and putting Tony Gillig on the bubble at 7.024.
Left Lane: Gary Wiggins Runs 15.938/62.44, Now #30; Best prior run: 7.374/149.35, Was #30
Right Lane: Larry Nance Runs 7.018/196.33, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.980/196.99, Was #8
Wiggins slowed almost immediately. Nice pass by Nance.
Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.917/199.70, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.925/198.76, Was #1
Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.936/198.23, Now #3; Best prior run: 7.027/196.16, Was #18
Two nice passes, WJ resetting his own track ET record and Schmidt bumping his way back into the field, putting Gillig out and putting Worden on the bubble at 7.011. We're five cars away from an all-six field.
Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.967/197.74, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.005/196.47, Was #13
Right Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 14.819/55.84, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.053/194.58, Was #23
Delgado shook hard, turned right, and shut it down quickly. Nice pass by Nobile, right down the groove.
Left Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 7.096/193.74, Now #26; Best prior run: 7.549/150.31, Was #32
Right Lane: Randy Jones Runs 10.931/81.58, Now #32; Best prior run: 7.517/192.74, Was #31
Patrick was the next car up when things were shut down for the night. He comes up short here. Jones fell off the pace early in the run.
Left Lane: Tony Gillig Runs 6.960/197.71, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.024/196.96, Was #17
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.978/198.64, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.994/197.77, Was #12
Gillig was just bumped a few pairs ago and Jeg usually qualifies a lot higher on the ladder than 12th. Gillig posts a 1.026 60-foot time and outqualifies Coughlin, moving into the top half of the field and bumping Worden. Now
it's KJ on the bubble, at 7.010, one of only three cars in the sevens and in the field.
Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.978/197.22, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.103/196.02, Was #27
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.999/196.85, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.004/196.96, Was #14
"Cowboy" improves and loses a spot on the ladder when Yates goes around him, bumping KJ and putting Larry Morgan on the bubble at 7.008 - the only seven left in the field.
Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 7.015/196.30, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.091/195.51, Was #26
Right Lane: Mike Trumble Runs 7.013/196.10, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.032/196.64, Was #21
Two DNQs here, Krisher's car very twitchy all the way down the lane.
Left Lane: Terry Smith Runs 7.127/193.35, Now #28; Best prior run: 7.232/191.87, Was #30
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.946/198.38, Now #6; Best prior run: 7.010/197.28, Was #17
KJ makes it an all-six field, bumping Morgan. The run started with a 1.026 60-foot time, so it was a pretty good effort. That puts Pawuk on the bubble at 6.999.
Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.944/197.16, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.056/195.65, Was #26
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.931/198.03, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.956/197.65, Was #7
Thomas runs an ugly 6.94, the car very twitchy. That bumps Pawuk and puts Greg Anderson on the bubble at 6.985. Thomas' 60-foot time was an unbelievable 1.008!
Left Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.975/198.09, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.026/197.74, Was #22
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.049/195.90, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.008/196.85, Was #18
Morgan got seriously out of the groove and lost a lot of ET. Martino bumps Anderson and puts Nance on the bubble at 6.980.
Left Lane: Ed Heck Runs 7.065/194.41, Now #27; Best prior run: 7.161/193.79, Was #29
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.951/198.06, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.967/197.13, Was #12
Final pair. Allen's car was very loose, losing some ET but still posting a pretty good time.
That's it, WJ on the pole and Larry Nance on the bubble.
