MEMPHIS - Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

The Plug Is Pulled

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 12th annual AutoZone Nationals presented by Pennzoil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Terry Smith Runs 11.630/75.90, Now #28; Best prior run: 7.232/191.87, Was #28
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.956/197.65, Now #2; Best prior run: 7.015/195.96, Was #10

9:49 PM Our scoring monitor is out of order, so we are doing this from the scoreboard numbers - no thousandths. That means that the order may not be accurate.

Smith's car took a dive at the centerline and he called it off. Nice pass by Edwards to make sure he won't be starting from "the sixteen hole" this weekend.

Left Lane: Mike Thomas No Time, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.056/195.65, Was #19
Right Lane: Larry Morgan 7.008/196.85, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.085/194.97, Was #22

Thomas' car made a wild right-left-right move. Missed his numbers, they were slow. Morgan gets in on a nice pass

Left Lane: Tom Martino Runs 9.817/92.93, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.026/197.74, Was #13
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.967/197.13, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.994/196.10, Was #6

The monitor is back up now. It's 0-3 for drivers in the left lane. Martino had a real handful. Allen made another impressive pass to improve over his surprising opening run.

Left Lane: Ed Heck Runs 10.521/85.51, Now #27; Best prior run: 7.161/193.79, Was #27
Right Lane: Lewis Worden No Time, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.011/195.62, Was #10

Missed Worden's ET and speed - but they were slow. Heck got over by the wall and decided to call it a day.

Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 7.047/194.69, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.098/194.27, Was #24
Right Lane: Ray Franks Runs 7.838/196.10, Now #26; Best prior run: 7.126/193.46, Was #26

The rear windows on the cars are heavily fogged up - a sign that the dewpoint and air temperature are very close.

Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 9.716/94.55, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.035/196.36, Was #16
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.320/186.30, Now #29; Best prior run: 9.728/94.12, Was #32

Another very crooked run in the left lane, in the marbles next to the wall, and Marnell shut it down.

Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 7.005/195.31, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.020/196.04, Was #11
Right Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 7.044/195.70, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.076/194.86, Was #22

Two surprisingly straight runs in a session where that is not the norm. Stevens steps up a couple rungs on the ladder.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.955/197.51, Now #2; Best prior run: 7.036/197.19, Was #17
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.998/197.33, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.975/197.39, Was #4

Two more good runs. The track may be coming around.

Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 7.030/195.68, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.040/196.16, Was #18
Right Lane: Larry Nance Runs 7.019/196.07, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.980/196.99, Was #6

Anderson squeaks into the field on the bubble on a snaking run, doing a better job than most of taming things down when his car got out of the groove.

Left Lane: Gary Wiggins Runs 7.374/149.35, Now #30; Best prior run: 8.653/111.75, Was #31
Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 8.617/112.85, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.027/196.16, Was #15

Wiggins may have lost an engine on the top end, a puff of smoke around the 1,000-foot marker.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.925/198.76, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.946/198.96, Was #1
Right Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 7.053/194.58, Now #21; Best prior run: 7.070/196.19, Was #22

WJ slams the door, just when everyone was struggling to get down the left lane, he steps up another couple hundredths on a very straight pass.

Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 7.009/196.39, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.005/196.47, Was #9
Right Lane: Randy Jones Runs 7.517/192.74, Now #31; Best prior run: 9.503/99.46, Was #32

Jones had his hands full, the car all over the lane. Good pass by Nobile, just a few thousandths slower than earlier this afternoon.

Left Lane: Robert Patrick No Time, Now #32; Best prior run: 7.549/150.31, Was #32
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin No Time, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.994/197.77, Was #7

Here we go again, the dew got so heavy that starter Rick Stewart called a temporary halt to the action. Then a light rain began to fall. We're on hold again. 10:18 PM

11:05 PM The light mist is still accumulating and the radar shows rain all around us, so that's it for tonight. The Safety safari dried the track five times and almost got it dry a sixth time, but the air is too moist to permit racing to continue tonight. Racing will resume Sunday morning at 8 AM with Stock Eliminator first round eliminations.
