TOPEKA, Kan. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 11th annual Advance Auto Parts Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.911/198.52, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.966/197.39, Was #1
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.974/196.13, Now #4; Best prior run: 7.011/196.19, Was #7
8:04 PM, 69 degrees, 35% humidity, and 29.82 on the barometer. The sun has set, the Musco lights are on, and we're ready to reset the record books here at Heartland Park Topeka.
Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 7.000/196.56, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.043/195.62, Was #15
Right Lane: Mike Trumble Runs 14.000/60.17, Now #25; Best prior run: 8.313/119.18, Was #25
It sounded like Trumble's tranny wouldn't shift, the engine going up hard against the rev limiter here. Anderson's Olds certainly looked quicker than the numbers indicated this time.
Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.985/196.22, Now #6; Best prior run: 7.070/194.60, Was #20
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 7.022/194.60, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.051/194.66, Was #18
These guys need to better Gillig's 7.049... and they do, bumping Gillig and Thomas in the process. So the bump is now Marnell's 7.031, but don't look for that to last long.
Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.990/196.47, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.021/195.90, Was #12
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.025/196.04, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.078/194.49, Was #21
Nobile moves up and Gaines moves in, bumping Marnell and moving Yates' 7.026 onto the bubble.
Left Lane: Lewis Worden Runs 9.457/98.31, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.050/195.19, Was #20
Right Lane: Ray Franks Runs 7.066/194.41, Now #21; Best prior run: 7.057/194.44, Was #21
Worden was quicker to 60' and 330' than Franks, then moves left out of the groove and lifts rather than leaving paint on the guardwall.
Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 7.030/196.36, Now #17; Best prior run: 9.659/94.05, Was #27
Right Lane: Ed Heck Runs 7.168/191.89, Now #26; Best prior run: 10.750/80.78, Was #28
Krisher misses the field by just 0.004, here, sliding right in behind Yates.
Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.907/198.70, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.983/196.36, Was #5
Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.966/196.22, Now #4; Best prior run: 7.024/195.25, Was #14
I knew WJ was on a lap when I saw his 1.01 60' time pop up, and sure enough he moves right to the head of the pack here. Schmidt moves right in behind Edwards, a fine run, too.
Left Lane: Brad Klein Runs 7.010/195.76, Now #12; Best prior run: 13.937/74.55, Was #31
Right Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 7.114/192.82, Now #25; Best prior run: 7.158/192.91, Was #25
Klein gets a solid run and bumps Yates, so that leaves V. Gaines in danger. The weather forecast is calling for cool temps tomorrow morning, too, so these guys may have a second chance this weekend.
Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.935/197.05, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.966/196.64, Was #3
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.925/198.23, Now #3; Best prior run: 11.553/76.41, Was #30
Kurt moves in right ahead of an improving Mike Edwards, so Gaines is out and Alderman is on the bump.
Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.977/196.96, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.031/194.88, Was #20
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.922/197.39, Now #3; Best prior run: 13.846/60.87, Was #31
Johnson betters WJ's short time, 1.013 to 1.015, and motors to the third spot.
Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.942/197.42, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.026/195.90, Was #20
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.935/197.39, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.972/197.10, Was #7
Nice pass for the Split Fire Firebird, moving Yates into the top half of this rapidly-changing show. Coughlin leapfrogs Edwards, too.
Left Lane: Mark Pawuk No Time, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.016/195.39, Was #17
Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.974/197.16, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.998/196.99, Was #13
The Summit Firebird backfires as Pawuk tries to fire the car, and the crew rushes to put out the resulting fire. It did enough damage to the hood scoop that they won't run this lap.
Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.949/197.08, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.006/195.73, Was #15
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.946/196.24, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.039/195.17, Was #22
Looks like 6.94's are cheap this time, both cars recording them here. We're just one car away from an all-six second field, Greg Anderson's 7.000 the bump now.
Left Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 7.006/196.73, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.101/194.66, Was #26
Right Lane: Randy Jones Runs 11.052/80.96, Now #32; No Prior Run
The shift light came on in Randy Jones' car as soon as he left the line and stayed on until he took his foot off the gas... and that was a long time.
Left Lane: Larry Nance Runs 7.006/196.59, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.019/195.53, Was #20
Right Lane: Jamie Yates Runs 7.039/194.55, Now #24; Best prior run: 17.203/120.60, Was #33
Yates gets a full pass in, so at least they'll have something representative to tune from, come tomorrow. Nance is making progress as well, under the watchful eye of Buddy Ingersoll.
Left Lane: Gary Wiggins No Time, Now #29; Best prior run: 7.133/191.89, Was #29
Right Lane: Michael Holton No Time, Now #32; Best prior run: 9.529/92.84, Was #32
Both cars turned left, and fortunately they did it at different points on the track, otherwise they would be looking for someone with fiberglass repair experience, here. I missed the times, but trust me, they were slow.
Right Lane: Tony Gillig Runs 7.015/195.87, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.049/195.22, Was #25
The final car, here, so we end with just one car -- Greg Anderson's Cutlass -- not in the sixes, and The Professor's GM Performance Parts Firebird leading the pack.
