ENNIS - Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

Field Shuffles - Except Top Two Spots

ENNIS, Texas - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 3rd annual NHRA Castrol Nationals presented by O'Reilly listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Tom Martino Runs 7.078/195.65, Now #5; Best prior run: 7.136/194.46, Was #8
Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 7.077/195.43, Now #4; Best prior run: 7.082/195.65, Was #5

5:42 PM The bump as we start this round is Hurley Blakeney's 7.309 - which will last about as long as it takes the first not-yet-qualified car to get down the track. It's still humid, but at least 10 degrees cooler.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.051/196.50, Now #3; Best prior run: 7.737/134.20, Was #17
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 7.044/197.02, Now #2; Best prior run: 7.013/197.54, Was #2

AJ takes care of basics here, getting from A to B with few problems. The right lane still appears a bit loose about 300 feet out, KJ having some problems getting through that area of the track.

Left Lane: Tony Gillig Runs 7.100/194.93, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.182/192.55, Was #15
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 7.065/195.52, Now #5; Best prior run: 7.079/195.52, Was #7

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 13.884/61.69, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.956/132.56, Was #18
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 7.088/194.97, Now #9; Best prior run: 8.055/120.82, Was #19

Coughlin's car shook and made a hard right turn as soon as he let the clutch out. No problems for Anderson, the Summit Firebird right down the groove and into the field.

Left Lane: Robert Harman Runs 7.136/193.46, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.181/192.80, Was #16
Right Lane: Hurley Blakeney No Time, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.309/191.57, Was #18

Blakeney's car really flattened out on the top end, the first half of the run looking very good.

Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 7.097/195.43, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.153/193.75, Was #14
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.082/195.18, Now #8; No Prior Run

Morgan's Dodge was much quicker off the starting line, but Nobile reeled him in on the top end.

Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 7.053/195.31, Now #4; Best prior run: 8.074/125.71, Was #21
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 7.068/195.48, Now #7; Best prior run: 10.851/80.88, Was #29

The bump after this pair is now Robert Harman's 7.136 - and that won't last long.

Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 7.041/196.42, Now #3; Best prior run: 8.240/122.00, Was #23
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 7.110/193.71, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.096/195.18, Was #13

Nice run by Thomas, smooth and straight, slipping in between Allen and Kurt Johnson at the top of the order. Alderman continues to struggle with the Dodge, going the wrong way this round.

Left Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 7.124/193.88, Now #18; Best prior run: 10.076/91.66, Was #28
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 7.086/194.38, Now #13; Best prior run: 9.222/103.31, Was #25

Now the bump is John Nobile's 7.097.

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 7.148/193.09, Now #21; Best prior run: 7.235/192.67, Was #23
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 7.060/195.14, Now #7; Best prior run: 9.431/100.21, Was #27

Geoffrion comes up short and Marnell puts Geoffrion's teammate, Alderman, on the bubble at 7.096.

Left Lane: Mike Trumble Runs 7.040/195.48, Now #3; Best prior run: 7.086/195.27, Was #13
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 7.006/196.50, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.989/198.28, Was #1

WJ's car made a move around 300 feet and he drove through it - dropping all the way into the sevens as a result (but still quickest of the round by a few hundredths of a second). Trumble made a nice run, clean and straight, to edge past Thomas and into the top three.

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 7.073/195.52, Now #11; Best prior run: 9.795/95.67, Was #28
Right Lane: Gary Wiggins Runs 7.156/193.63, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.152/193.88, Was #22

Allen bumps Alderman and puts Greg Anderson on the bubble at 7.088.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.071/195.60, Now #11; Best prior run: 10.320/88.80, Was #29
Right Lane: Lewis Worden Runs 7.131/194.04, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.158/193.88, Was #24

Gaines bumps Anderson, putting Ron Krisher on the bubble at 7.086.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 7.065/195.52, Now #10; Best prior run: 8.518/117.06, Was #29
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 7.048/195.82, Now #5; Best prior run: 7.055/196.07, Was #7

Two nice runs here, Pawuk moving the multi-hued Summit Firebird into the top half of the field and Coughlin bumping Krisher. That puts Larry Morgan on the bubble at 7.082.

Right Lane: Larry Nance Runs 7.194/193.38, Now #27; Best prior run: 7.162/194.04, Was #27

6:11 PM Nance closes the round with an off-pace run, the chute out as he crossed the finish line.
