By Rick Green

POMONA, Calif. - Results of round 1 eliminations in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the 34th annual NHRA Winston Finals:
 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   9 Larry Miner 5.793 254.66 Q 8 John Lawson 5.789 248.07
                  0.441 11.581 70.13 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.424 5.843 244.56

The temperature is 79 degrees, humidity is 19% and the barometer is 30.01 inches. Miner has problems real early in the run, and then Lawson gets real loose, but holds on for the win.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   6 Steve Sommer 5.764 247.45 Q 11 Todd Paton 5.809 249.79
 *****WINNER***** 0.469 5.853 245.29 E1 0.482 5.933 240.00

Both cars are skating down both lanes using up all of the track.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  14 Brian Hough 5.868 247.66 Q 3 Johnny Gray 5.703 252.66
                  0.470 9.947 94.57 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.445 5.771 249.37

Hough is up in smoke immediately, and pedals it one time, and then blisters the hides rest of the way through the quarter-mile. Gray takes the win light, but I could not see the run with all the tire smoke from Hough.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  10 Mert Littlefield 5.803 242.91 Q 7 Bucky Austin 5.783 247.18
                  0.497 5.819 235.04 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.457 5.772 247.38

This is a drag race until just past half track that is when Littlefield gets real loose and is all over his lane. Austin improves on his qualifying time and takes the win.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   2 John Weaver 5.652 250.97 Q 15 Sam Blue 5.869 236.46
 *****WINNER***** 0.488 5.733 248.82 E1 0.454 5.975 241.15

Blue is out of the gate first, but Weaver comes charging hard, getting very close to the centerline, but tip toes down it for the win.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  12 Steve Gasparrelli 5.814 247.45 Q 5 John Hyland 5.764 250.90
                  0.473 5.959 213.32 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.450 5.860 245.56

Hyland leaves first and never looks back, both cars skating all the way down the track.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  13 Mike Andreotti 5.814 245.09 Q 4 Pete Swayne 5.732 251.60
                  0.507 9.643 90.49 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.522 5.848 245.09

Andreotti makes a move toward the centerline as soon as he launches and then clicks it off. Swayne takes the easy win.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  16 Fran Monaghan 5.887 247.18 Q 1 Pat Austin 5.649 253.52
                  0.476 5.923 243.83 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.470 5.738 252.17

Monaghan chatters the tires right off the starting line, and that is all Austin needed to advance on to round two.
