BAYTOWN, Texas - Results of round 2 eliminations in Pro Stock at the 2nd annual Matco Tools Supernationals:
Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed 5 Richie Stevens 6.938 197.93 Q 13 Jeg Coughlin 6.989 197.41 (J Nobile ) 0.442 6.989 197.62 E1 (M Osborne ) 0.426 7.040 197.15 0.495 7.041 196.37 E2 *****WINNER***** 0.443 7.025 197.02
1:25 PM We've seen no rain yet, just lots of clouds and a light sprinkle at 9 AM. Right now the clouds are dark - but off to our left.
Jeg shows that there's nothing wrong with the right lane, with a big holeshot and a car length victory.
Just as the cars crossed the finish line, a light sprinkle started falling and things went on hold for a minute or two.
Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed 1 Kurt Johnson 6.920 198.67 Q 8 Steve Schmidt 6.969 197.36 (T Coughlin ) 0.500 6.982 197.84 E1 (M Edwards ) 0.467 7.015 196.72 0.448 7.712 139.96 E2 *****WINNER***** 0.486 7.032 196.50
KJ looked like a clear winner here, but when his car came out from behind the shelter of the stands he got out of shape and had to lift, the stiff left-to-right crosswind apparently upsetting his car. Schmidt advances to the semifinals to face Jeg Coughlin, Coughlin with lane choice.
Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed 3 Jim Yates 6.935 197.80 Q 6 Mark Pawuk 6.946 197.58 (G Marnell ) 0.498 6.979 196.93 E1 (R Krisher ) 0.504 6.992 197.88 *****WINNER***** 0.481 6.988 197.02 E2 0.442 7.066 196.03
Pawuk got a big holeshot here, but couldn't get down the right lane cleanly and Yates, running more like he did last year than he has this season, won by half a car length.
Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed 2 Warren Johnson 6.923 198.67 Q 7 Tom Martino 6.962 196.85 (V Gaines ) 0.515 6.956 199.02 E1 (M Thomas ) 0.536 6.999 197.80 0.000 (Broke) E2 0.000 (Broke)
Just as these two made their burnouts, the skies opened and it began to rain for real. The wind picked up and became very gusty, the temperature dropping rapidly. These two headed for the pits, followed closely by all the cars in the staging lanes, the crews scurrying for shelter and the stands clearing rapidly.
We'll be down for a couple hours, at least.
