CHRRX - Nostalgia Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Final Session

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Notes from final, round 2 qualifying in Nostalgia Top Fuel at the 10th Annual California Hot Rod Reunion Presented by Automobile Club of Southern California listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:


Left Lane: Rich Howell Runs 9.918/172.71, Now #20; Best prior run: 15.308/65.69, Was #23

4:00PM It's time for the last session of Top Fuel. Howell is still looking for the handle for clutch management. He is up in smoke again at the hit.

Left Lane: Rance McDaniel Runs 6.270/223.54, Now #9; Best prior run: 14.870/69.83, Was #23
Right Lane: Ty Norton Runs 6.703/203.85, Now #15; Best prior run: 10.891/110.10, Was #21

Both cars improve a bunch and get into the B side of the show.

Left Lane: Shep Ginzburg Runs 6.873/209.44, Now #17; Best prior run: 8.915/122.19, Was #20
Right Lane: Rick McGee Runs 6.409/224.71, Now #13; Best prior run: 9.212/88.46, Was #21

One cars gets in and one doesn't. A good improvement for both cars.

Left Lane: Mike McLennan Runs 6.298/228.31, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.167/220.85, Was #7
Right Lane: Fred Farndon Runs 6.778/164.02, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.270/182.96, Was #19

Fred told me that he leaned it down a bunch for this run. This is only the second full pass and he leaves hard and would have likely made the show, except that he drifted into the finish line lights and is disqualified. McLennan was DQ for being too light after the last session. He's not as quick this run, but is in the show for now.

Left Lane: Bill Dunlap Runs 6.205/220.58, Now #8; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jim Boyd Runs 11.880/75.55, Now #24; No Prior Run

Dunlap has the good news and the bad news. He's in the show for now, but has a flash, bang, and fire in the lights. Boyd's luck continues to be all bad as he goes up in smoke at the hit.

Left Lane: John Shoemaker Runs 6.465/196.50, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.085/152.41, Was #20
Right Lane: Mark Malde Runs 6.297/226.18, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.479/213.62, Was #15

Good news for both cars, as they move into the show.

Left Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 6.203/229.76, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.289/218.76, Was #11
Right Lane: Bob Muravez Runs 7.259/139.92, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.298/224.77, Was #13

Kuhns is now on the bump for the A group. No joy for Muravez as he smokes the tires.

Left Lane: Denver Schutz Runs 6.224/225.62, Now #10; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Dale Pulde Runs 6.263/244.49, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.247/234.55, Was #10

Pulde was just bumped from the A field and will have to settle for the B side. Schutz make a good pass and move in front of Pulde.

Left Lane: Pierre Poncia Runs 7.270/174.35, Now #22; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Lee Jennings Runs 14.961/51.69, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.112/228.54, Was #2

No joy for either team. Jennings is up in smoke and Poncia doesn't have the package today to qualify.

Left Lane: Jack Harris Runs 6.183/134.92, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.128/244.43, Was #3
Right Lane: Jim Murphy Runs 16.197/54.98, Now #24; Best prior run: 7.993/150.93, Was #24

Neither car can improve. Murphy is up in smoke immediately.

Left Lane: Glenn Hutchison No Time, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.147/230.53, Was #6

Hutchinson runs a better 6.121 at 231.54, but hits the lights and the run is DQ'ed.

Left Lane: Kent Terry Runs 6.495/221.72, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.506/220.31, Was #18

Terry is slightly better in the heat, but can't break into the show. The bump for the B side is 6.409.

Left Lane: Butch Blair No Time, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.367/226.01, Was #15

Blair is shut off while backing up from the burnout. We have a brief delay while they clean up the oil.

Left Lane: Brendan Murry Runs 7.109/159.77, Now #22; No Prior Run

Murry leaves hard and is on a good pass untill mid track. He starts to get a guard rail to center line swing going and has to lift.

Left Lane: Gerry Steiner Runs 6.100/220.75, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.972/247.32, Was #1

Lots of anticipation for this run. It's still hot and Steiner makes the second quickest run of the meet. ...and that's a wrap for qualifying this year. The cruise has started and everyone is still in the stands waiting for a reported 28 cars in this year's "Cacklefest".
