 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   9 Brad Jeter 6.802 202.55 Q 8 Warren Johnson 6.801 202.21
 *****WINNER***** 0.456 6.812 201.04 E1 0.436 6.863 202.21
12:11 PM It's 52 degrees, 54 percent relative humidity, 30.13 inches of mercury, and mostly cloudy.

WJ is 5-1 against Jeter this year, Jeter's only win against Johnson coming in the first round in Seattle. WJ lost this one in the first 330 feet after a brilliant light, his tires shaking and the car skating around. Margin of victory = 0.031 seconds (approximately 9 feet). The points leader is out in the first round!

  10 Bruce Allen 6.803 201.13 Q 7 Mike Edwards 6.799 202.18
 *****WINNER***** 0.442 6.802 200.47 E1 0.430 7.604 136.43
Allen and Edwards have met twice before this year, Edwards winning both times. This time, however, Edwards holeshot was offset by handling problems, the car getting out of shape around half track.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
  11 Tom Hammonds 6.806 202.21 Q 6 Ron Krisher 6.797 202.91

Third upset in a row, Hammonds with just his second-ever round win. Margin of victory = 0.053 seconds (approximately 16 feet).

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   5 Jim Yates 6.794 202.79 Q 12 Tom Martino 6.810 202.79
                  0.465 6.773 202.09 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.429 6.802 202.97
Yates and Martino have met three times this year, Martino winning two of the three, including a first round matchup in Sonoma and a second round meeting in Chicago, last weekend. Yates' win came in the first round at the U.S. Nationals. Yates made a last-second lane change after seeing the previous three cars in the right lane have problems. Didn't work, martino with a brilliant holeshot and a very good run to make Yates the first driver ever in Pro Stock to lose with a run in the seventies! Margin of victory = 0.007 seconds (approximately 2 feet). The #1 and #2 in points are out'a here!

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   4 Darrell Alderman 6.788 202.39 Q 13 George Marnell 6.817 201.04
 *****WINNER***** 0.433 6.794 202.18 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.437 6.846 201.61
Marnell and Alderman have met just once before this season, Alderman defeating Marnell in the second round in Chicago, a week ago. They left right together and Alderman becomes the first top-half winner of the round, the first-ever round win with an ET in the seventies. He has lane choice against Martino next round.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   3 Kurt Johnson 6.779 203.74 Q 14 Troy Coughlin 6.825 201.31
                  0.472 6.813 201.91 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.442 6.771 203.83
A huge win for Troy, taking the speed record away from Osborne and matching Osborne's record ET. Margin of victory = 0.072 seconds (approximately 21 feet). Troy has lane choice against Hammonds next round.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   2 Jeg Coughlin 6.778 202.64 Q 15 V. Gaines 6.830 201.76
 *****WINNER***** 0.435 6.750 202.55 E1 0.436 6.865 197.39
Gaines and Jeg have met just once before this year, Coughlin taking the win at Columbus. They left together, but then it was all Jeg, with the quickest run ever - and he already has a backup on the books, so now his 6.750 is the national record.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   1 Mark Osborne 6.771 202.70 Q 16 Larry Morgan 6.831 202.21
 *****WINNER***** 0.466 6.761 202.94 E1 0.466 6.812 202.94
This is the first meeting between teammates Ozzie and Morgan this year. Morgan tried to mess with Osborne's mind, pulling up and staging while Ozzie was still making his burnout, but Ozzie kept his cool, took his time, and they left right together. Then Osborne ran away, winning easily despite a career-best run by Morgan. Margin of victory = 0.051 seconds (approximately 15 feet). Osborne has lane choice against Jeter in round two.
