COMMERCE, Ga. - The top racers from the NHRA Southeast Division arrived at Atlanta Dragway for the first day of time trials in the NHRA Summit Racing Series Division Finals. This weekend's event will crown five champions in the following categories: Super Pro, Pro, Street, Pro Bike/Motorcycle, and High School. The winners in ever category, except high school, will advance to the NHRA Summit Racing Series Finals in Pomona, Ca., to compete against drivers from around the country with hopes of becoming the Summit Racing Series 2001 National Champion.
Over 500 racecars are expected to compete in this weekend's festivities including last year's winners: Mike Ruff from Orlando Speed World Dragway in Super Pro, Jay Woodward from Sumerduck Dragway in Pro, Tim Griffith of Bristol Dragway in Street, and Tom Gardner of Moroso Motorsports Park in Pro Bike. In addition, Moroso Motorsports Park will try and defend their team championship against teams from fifteen other NHRA member tracks, including last year's runner-up Orlando Speed World Dragway. Orlando Speed World Dragway narrowly missed the championship by only four points.
Said last year's Super Pro winner, Mike Ruff, "We, [Orlando Speed World Dragway] barely got beat for the team title last year. Adding, "Hopefully we can get it done this time."
Gates will open at 8:00 a.m. with final time trials scheduled between 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Southeast division Race of Champions is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. For more information call the Atlanta Dragway, (706) 335-2301.
