READING - Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #2

MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel at the 17th annual Pep Boys NHRA Nationals presented by Greased Lightning listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:


Left Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 4.586/315.93, Now #3; Best prior run: 9.768/81.87, Was #11
Right Lane: Jim Cavalieri Runs 4.944/245.32, Now #8; No Prior Run

3:48 PM Bernstein went up in smoke on his first attempt and Cavalieri's car was towed back to the pits without making an attempt in that stanza. Bernstein's car showed no traces of smoke anywhere on this pass, a nice, smooth, clean effort with an aggressive 0.856 60-foot time. Cavalieri made a clean pass, losing ground to Bernstein at each incremental timer. Cavalieri was running 249.72 mph at half track, but slowed around the 1,000-foot marker.

Left Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 4.662/310.63, Now #6; Best prior run: 8.296/86.44, Was #12
Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.544/320.13, Now #1; Best prior run: 12.056/103.28, Was #15

Two reformed tire smokers, making clean, strong runs here. Scelzi took the top spot away from Mike Dunn on this run.

Left Lane: Scott Weis Runs 4.665/307.37, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.295/112.17, Was #13
Right Lane: Darrell Russell Runs 4.676/310.84, Now #8; Best prior run: 9.871/78.46, Was #14

Two more smooth, clean runs, Weis with a career-best elapsed time.

Left Lane: Rhonda Hartman-Smith Runs 5.310/210.05, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.776/244.43, Was #11
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 4.689/308.00, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.748/278.75, Was #10

Hartman-Smith's car dropped a cylinder early and then started eating some parts on the top end. No problems we could see in Schumacher's lane, a clean, smooth run.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.602/309.63, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.619/310.34, Was #5
Right Lane: Andrew Cowin Runs 4.589/318.84, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.709/300.13, Was #10

Two more clean, smooth runs, Cowin with a season-best elapsed time that is just 0.001 seconds off his career-best mark.

Left Lane: Mike Dunn Runs 4.597/309.91, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.570/326.40, Was #2
Right Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.570/317.94, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.579/312.50, Was #3

These two topped the order after the first round, Scelzi moving around them with his run earlier in this session. Dixon's car posted the lowest 60-foot time of the weekend, a very aggressive 0.838, but fell behind Scelzi's incremental times from 330 feet on. Dunn's car was not quite as strong as it was on his first run, the header flames mixing it up on the top end and the incremental times slightly behind those on the earlier run.
