CHICAGO-2 - Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Dave Rowe

JOLIET, Ill. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the Inaugural NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.840/317.79, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.912/164.43, Was #20

Worsham hasn't made a good pass all weekend and isn't in the show. He changes all that on this run, right down the middle, and gets in the tenth spot. We now have fifteen cars in the 4.8's, Etchells being the only one that isn't at this point.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.840/317.79, Now #10; Best prior run: 0.000/164.43, Was #12

Worsham hasn't made a good pass all weekend and isn't in the show. He changes all that on this run, right down the middle, and gets in the tenth spot. We now have fifteen cars in the 4.8's, Etchells being the only one that isn't at this point.

Left Lane: John Lawson Runs 5.193/254.33, Now #21; Best prior run: 5.147/295.21, Was #20
Right Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 4.987/300.00, Now #18; Best prior run: 10.104/89.75, Was #21

Creasy doesn't get in the show but his crew is celebrating on the starting line. This is the first time Creasy has ever run in the four's. Lawson slows from his earlier run and will not make the show.

Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 8.813/91.93, Now #20; Best prior run: 5.042/280.37, Was #20
Right Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 4.818/316.45, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.879/309.98, Was #15

Toliver runs a career best ET and speed on this pass and moves up to number six. Bode breaks the tires loose about 300 feet out, gets out of shape and shuts down.

Left Lane: Jim Epler Runs 5.018/286.80, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.026/273.44, Was #19
Right Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 4.868/303.57, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.874/310.70, Was #15

Skuza runs his best pass of the weekend but doesn't improve enough to move up in the order. Epler can't improve and doesn't make the show.

Left Lane: Al Hofmann Runs 5.073/284.03, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.957/305.08, Was #17
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.872/307.72, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.856/307.23, Was #14

No help for these two, Capps is already in the field but Hofmann to make the show.

Left Lane: Chuck Etchells Runs 8.182/99.63, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.925/306.95, Was #16
Right Lane: Bruce Sarver Runs 4.837/306.81, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.837/314.09, Was #10

Etchells is the last hope to make this the quickest field ever, the quickest being 4.900, but he doesn't do it here. He gets about 300 feet out, breaks the tires loose and has to abort the run. A great run for Sarver, the same as his last run, but a 4.837 won't get you in the top half of the field this weekend.

Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 4.958/277.03, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.856/312.86, Was #13
Right Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 4.851/311.85, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.828/309.27, Was #9

Good runs for both drivers, but not enough to help either move up in the order.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.857/314.31, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.844/280.19, Was #12
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.817/313.66, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.827/307.23, Was #8

Wilkerson runs a career best ET and moves up four spots to fourth. Densham slows and stays in twelfth.

Left Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 7.385/112.28, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.817/313.00, Was #5
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 12.268/89.73, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.822/312.71, Was #8

Gray goes up in smoke right off the line and has to shut down. Pedregon gets about 300 feet out, starts to lose traction and shuts down.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.794/313.51, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.805/315.05, Was #3
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 4.828/310.70, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.817/308.78, Was #6

Pedregon makes a great pass, his quickest of the year, and he jumps into second in front of Force.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.756/311.49, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.800/316.90, Was #3
Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 5.164/206.23, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.750/323.27, Was #1

Force makes a great run here. He had a great .869 sixty foot time and a 3.237 at halftrack. Just before he went through the lights the engine let go, smoke pouring from the headers. Bazemore was on another good run until the 1000 foot mark, then something went wrong, not sure what, and he shut down.
