LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Nostalgia Top Fuel at the 12th Annual Goodguys Fall Classic listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Mike Lockman Runs 8.464/94.48, Now #2
Right Lane: Brenden Murry Runs 6.533/204.88, Now #1
11:03 AM The first pair of Top Fuel cars are on the pad and we are waiting for a short cleaning after the sportsman time trials. Lockman is making his first appearance with the Goodguys. Lockman has problems after a soft leave and clicks it early. Murry gets a full pull but the heat will cause the teams be very carefull. The temperature is already over 90 degrees and the humidity is down to about 10 percent.
Left Lane: Kent Terry Runs 6.868/212.09, Now #2
Right Lane: Rich Howell Runs 14.030/66.56, Now #4
We've been down for about twenty minutes to clean the track after Lockman's pass. According to the info I get the clean up crew found aluminum on the track so it's either a very short or a very long weekend for that team. The next pair comes to life and we have a pair of Chevy's about to do combat. Howell was up in smoke at the hit but Terry manages to run it out the back door for top speed.
Left Lane: Bill Dunlap Runs 6.354/180.55, Now #1
Right Lane: Lee Jennings Runs 10.607/83.29, Now #5
Jennings was way to agressive and smoked the tires about ten feet out. Dunlap was on a really nice pass untill about the 1000 foot mark, where he lifted. No smoke out of the engine but he decided to call it off.
Left Lane: Jim Murphy Runs 6.475/180.94, Now #3
Right Lane: Rick McGee Runs 6.325/215.58, Now #1
Murphy is sporting the Orchard Supply colors was on another nice pass until he also clicked it early. Mcgee makes his first appearance in awhile count with low ET and top speed of the session.
Left Lane: Jack Harris No Time, Now #0
Right Lane: Mike McLennan No Time, Now #0
Left Lane: Dale Pulde Runs 6.414/0.00, Now #4
Right Lane: Rance McDaniel Runs 6.215/207.69, Now #1
Pulde has a top speed that I'm not even going to mention. I think the computer problems we suffered in the last pair have carried over to this pair. Both ET's were within reason so I'll call them fair. McDaniel was busy after half track but still runs low ET of the first session.
Left Lane: Denver Schutz Runs 6.255/208.55, Now #2
Right Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 6.436/229.31, Now #6
Schutz takes his ride into the #2 positions with a clean pass right down the middle. Kuhns, of Pro Mod fame, runs top speed of the meet in his AAFD.
Left Lane: Bob Muravez Runs 6.464/212.73, Now #7
Right Lane: Gerry Steiner Runs 10.791/39.03, Now #13
Steiner doesn't move ten feet before he began smoking the tires. Muravez puts the Western Hoist Special into the top half of the field. Brenden Murry was bumped into the 'B' field by Muravez.
Left Lane: Howard Haight Runs 6.264/234.41, Now #3
Right Lane: Ron Hope Runs 9.021/118.75, Now #13
While all the attention was focused on Hope, in the 'Rat Trap' fuel altered, it's Haight that runs it right down the middle of the lane. Haight's mph is top speed. Hope was forced to lift a couple of times as his racer acted like the fuel altered it is. What a ride!
Left Lane: Roger Lechtenberg Runs 6.414/233.56, Now #7
Right Lane: Tim Gibson Runs 6.239/237.05, Now #2
Gibson has a weekend off from the NHRA competition and is making the most of it. That was the good news. The bad news was that fire could be seen coming out from under the MasterCam racer just as he got to the lights. That's confirmed as the safety crew rolls to clean up the far end of the track.
Left Lane: Jack Harris Runs 6.344/204.82, Now #6
Right Lane: Mike McLennan Runs 7.176/205.94, Now #15
Smoke for McLennan but he moves into the #15 spot. Harris takes a long ride but makes the top half.
