MEMPHIS - Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #2

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel at the 14th annual AutoZone NHRA Nationals presented by Pennzoil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:


Left Lane: Andrew Cowin Runs 7.093/110.55, Now #16; Best prior run: 10.891/75.88, Was #16

Cowin started to loose traction around 200 feet and pedaled it only to go back up in smoke, so he clicked it off.

Left Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 4.597/313.51, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.907/150.60, Was #14

Herbert with a 0.864 60-foot time and then just picture perfect from the there on with the header flames high in the air.

Left Lane: Scott Weis Runs 4.745/314.02, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.895/284.45, Was #12
Right Lane: Rhonda Hartman-Smith Runs 10.030/67.67, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.741/303.16, Was #8

Hartman-Smith launched hard, but then threw the blower belt off around 330 feet. Weis made a move in the right direction and a great top end charge.

Left Lane: David Grubnic Runs 9.985/86.09, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.846/294.50, Was #11
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 4.710/267.53, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.707/307.37, Was #7

Grubnic chattered the tires right off the starting line and then clicked it off. Schumacher was on a great looking pass just before the finish line when the header flames went out. He was going 265.69 mph at half track.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.811/260.86, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.757/294.37, Was #10
Right Lane: Darrell Russell Runs 12.202/44.15, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.678/306.81, Was #6

Russell blistered the tires by 100 feet. Kalitta was on great pass until around 1100 feet then there was a quick flash of flame. Kalitta was going 254.66 mph at half track.

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.581/309.70, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.637/314.17, Was #5
Right Lane: Mike Dunn Runs 10.077/83.46, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.624/306.67, Was #4

Dunn was up in smoke right off the starting line. Dixon with a great 0.838 60-foot time and then it moved around a little in the middle of the run. He kept the candles lit all the way through the 1320 to take the number one spot.

Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.606/313.44, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.621/309.49, Was #4
Right Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 4.600/318.99, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.608/317.27, Was #3

A great side by side drag race to finish the evening as both pick up, but they stay numbers three and four. The header flames were shooting way over the big wings all the way down the quarter mile.
