FMDRS 6-6 - Federal-Mogul Dragster Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Michael L. Jex

MEDFORD, Ore. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the Snap On Tools Valley Thunder Weekend listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Bernie Plourd Runs 5.907/237.00, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.060/194.85, Was #9

Bernie's car is sporting a big block chevy power plant, PSI blower and a few other parts - this is the best run he's made on the car - but he'll stay in the 1st alternate position. The car is improving each time he goes down the track however, and progress is progress!

Left Lane: Don Hudson Runs 5.689/222.73, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.683/253.07, Was #6
Right Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.593/252.98, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.566/255.76, Was #5

Hough lifted the front end up almost immediately - he ran a 1.052 short time by tripping the timers with the rear slicks. The car drifted right just a little, but Brian kept his foot firmly on the loud pedal. The skinny front slicks didn't come back to earth till almost half track. It was an awesome looking pass - but had too much excitement on the run to move up the ladder.

Left Lane: Mark Hentges Runs 5.545/228.46, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.564/255.76, Was #4
Right Lane: Paul Jones Runs 5.567/248.39, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.514/255.76, Was #3

Hentges shift light was clearly visible for the 1-2 shift change, it's that dark outside! The runs were exciting, but hard to see at the top end.

Left Lane: Duane Shields No Time, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.445/260.13, Was #2
Right Lane: Rick Santos Runs 5.426/257.08, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.402/260.19, Was #1

Shields got out of the groove and over towards the centerline. He lifted early and popped the chutes. When the chutes went past the finish line timers the billowing silk took out the top end cones, but the run counts as he'd already crossed the finish line.

Consistency wins drag races - Santos is loaded for Bear, Steak, Lamb chops, and just about any other form of protein the Oakwood time may want. They have run low ET of all three rounds today. There were several no-shows, so the field is set - Santos will race Bill Edwards, Shields will race Steve Federlin, Paul Jones and Don Hudson will do battle, and Mark Hentges will face the spoiler, the driver who can't win the division, can't win the title, but can end Mark's National title bid - Brian Hough. 9:18 PM
