INDY - Federal-Mogul Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Bob Orme

CLERMONT, Ind. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the 47th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Dennis Taylor Runs 5.899/227.96, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.965/223.21, Was #9
Right Lane: Kim Fritts Runs 5.890/245.23, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.950/238.76, Was #8

4:24 PM Fritts was dancing around in the middle section of the track, but still moves up the ladder. Taylor also improves, but it isn't without a heavy price as he blew the engine going through the traps. We are down from track clean up.

Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.808/247.66, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.906/147.15, Was #17
Right Lane: Tate Branch Runs 6.018/223.73, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.016/238.98, Was #11

4:33 PM The bump is currently at 6.161 seconds. Gordon moves way up the ladder with this pass. Branch had thick smoke coming from the rear of the car as he crossed the finish line, pointing to a blown engine, but this time there was no oil on the track.

Left Lane: Dave Kovar Runs 6.269/225.07, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.153/135.71, Was #18
Right Lane: Fred Hagen Runs 5.993/247.29, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.161/241.58, Was #17

Hagen improves quite a bit here, while Kovar doesn't make it into the show.

Left Lane: Jeff Craig No Time, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.976/244.83, Was #11
Right Lane: James Libby Runs 6.542/158.56, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.020/233.08, Was #15

Craig broke after the burnout and was pushed away from the starting line. Libby was skating around his lane in the middle section of the track and he clicked off it at the 1000-foot mark.

Left Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.680/251.39, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.752/251.39, Was #2
Right Lane: Von Smith Runs 5.900/247.16, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.832/246.17, Was #4

With a very strong pass, Manzo moves into the top spot for now.

Left Lane: Todd Veney Runs 5.909/245.54, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.936/243.41, Was #10
Right Lane: Bobby Martin Runs 6.025/239.27, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.071/240.42, Was #16

Martin lowers his ET after a tire-shaking launch, but he stays on the bump.

Left Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.885/243.77, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.887/245.14, Was #5
Right Lane: Bucky Austin Runs 5.784/250.41, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.890/246.66, Was #6

No problems for either driver, with Austin moving up a few positions.

Left Lane: Vern Moats Runs 5.990/241.63, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.017/244.07, Was #14
Right Lane: Mark Poyser Runs 8.638/98.61, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.160/228.69, Was #17

The bump is currently at 6.025 seconds. Poyser shook the tires hard at the 100-foot mark. He tried to pedal through it, without success. He will be the first alternate for eliminations.

Left Lane: Steve Addleman Runs 5.838/242.10, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.923/237.59, Was #10
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.680/251.06, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.699/252.85, Was #2

Payne, currently the national points leader in Feral-Mogul Funny Car, misses the top qualifying spot due to being about a third of a mile-per-hour slower than Frank Manzo, both drivers having identical ET's. Rounding out the field in 16th position is Bobby Martin.
