Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By David Gerard

BROWNSBURG, Ind. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 62nd annual Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Steve Franke No Time, Now #2
Right Lane: Phil Esz Runs 5.844/241.63, Now #1

2:00 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 81 degrees, relative humidity 47 percent, barometer 29.24 inches, adjusted altitude 2,885 feet, track temperature 104 degrees.

Franke car is a little lazy off the line and then moves out of the groove and nails the 660 foot reflectors to DQ the pass.

This is Esz's first National Event, after making his debut at Bowling Green last weekend. He gets a clean and straight pass to tune to.

Phil Esz's incremental times: 60ft-1.025 sec., 330ft-2.615, 660ft-3.858/198.50 mph, 1,000ft-4.924.

Left Lane: Joshua Haskett Runs 7.021/210.11, Now #2
Right Lane: Chris King Runs 8.439/104.05, Now #3

2:10 p.m. Back to qualifying.

King has the front end come way up at the green and then dumps. He tries to go again and the car starts to porpoise. He finally gives it up.

Haskett's car was lazy down low and then slows early.

Left Lane: Bryan Brown Runs 8.395/122.46, Now #3

Brown will make a single, as Pfeister sits out the session.

Brown smokes the tires hard, pumps, hits it again, and then bangs the blower down track. OUCH! The NHRA guys are out checking the track, but it doesn't look like any oil on the track.

Left Lane: Nancy Matter Runs 6.492/175.52, Now #3
Right Lane: Steve Burck Runs 5.738/253.33, Now #1

2:17 p.m. All done down track.

Matter gets away first and starts to move around. She pedals and then has a major engine dismemberment, a flash of fire and a lot of smoke, but no oil.

Burck gets to the finish line without drama to get the top spot for now.

Steve Burck's incremental times: 60ft-1.005 sec., 330ft-2.574, 660ft-3.804/201.79 mph, 1,000ft-4.851.

Left Lane: Todd Robertson Runs 9.894/105.18, Now #7
Right Lane: Ulf Leanders Runs 11.963/77.49, Now #8

Both cars are up in smoke off the line. Leanders at the green and Robertson scores a 0.955 sixty foot time before having to lift.

Left Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.691/259.81, Now #2
Right Lane: Chris Foster Runs 5.677/254.28, Now #1

We finally get a side by side pair and it's a good one.

They leave just 0.006 seconds apart and run together to the new top two spots. Nice!

Clint Thompson's incremental times: 60ft-0.998 sec., 330ft-2.588, 660ft-3.802/205.54 mph, 1,000ft-4.826.
Chris Foster's incremental times: 60ft-0.972 sec., 330ft-2.543, 660ft-3.758/203.74 mph, 1,000ft-4.796.

Left Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.635/261.22, Now #1
Right Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 5.652/257.09, Now #2

Gasparrelli is away first by a bunch and powers on down the track into the new top spot.

Bogolo runs near a career best ET and a new career best speed to take the current #2 spot.

Steve Gasparrelli's incremental times: 60ft-0.974 sec., 330ft-2.545, 660ft-3.752/206.13 mph, 1,000ft-4.774.

Cox makes and strong pass after Januik shakes and spins.

DJ Cox Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.989 sec., 330ft-2.527, 660ft-3.738/204.76 mph, 1,000ft-4.776.

Left Lane: Andy Bohl Runs 5.592/264.55, Now #2
Right Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 5.529/267.27, Now #1

Ulf Leanders is on the bump spot at 11.963.

Whiteley is away first by a bunch and runs right to the top of the ladder with a low fifty pass. Bohl chases and slides into the ladder right behind her for #2.

Andy Bohl's incremental times: 60ft-0.973 sec., 330ft-2.522, 660ft-3.724/206.89 mph, 1,000ft-4.740.

Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.636/253.18, Now #5
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.580/262.90, Now #2

Todd Robertson is on the bump spot at 9.894.

Payne has the Camaro drive towards the centerline near mid-track and then has no parachute after the finish line. The car drifts steadily towards the wall and just clips it. One chute is finally out and he gets the car stopped without any more drama.

Good clean pass for Gordon for the #2 spot.

Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-0.974 sec., 330ft-2.536, 660ft-3.744/205.22 mph, 1,000ft-4.766.
Doug Gordon's incremental times: 60ft-0.955 sec., 330ft-2.507, 660ft-3.708/207.08 mph, 1,000ft-4.725.

Right Lane: John Lombardo Jr. Runs 5.479/251.95, Now #1

Bryan Brown is on the bump spot at 8.395.

Lombardo leave hard and pulls steadily ahead to set the top mark for the session. There may have been some top end issues, as the speed is way off.

Lindberg started well and then was off the throttle before mid-track.

John Lombardo Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.956 sec., 330ft-2.479, 660ft-3.643/213.74 mph, 1,000ft-4.627.
