RICHMOND, Va. -- Imagine for a moment that the Pro Modified class had no minimum weight restrictions, nitrous was available on any combination and a doorslammer could roll up to the starting line with the whistle of a turbocharger emanating from under the hood. With that in mind, consider that instead of 6.2-second elapsed times, these thunderous doorslammers could cover the quarter-mile in 5.9-seconds at over 240 miles per hour. When you throw all those variables together and add $5,000, you have the recipe for the InfiNet Contractors' Insurance Ultimate Doorslammer Challenge.
Veteran Pro Modified statistician Bobby Bennett, also Publisher of CompetitionPlus.com, points out that this could be the ultimate opportunity for Pro Modified racers to breach the five-second barrier and claim the honor of driving the quickest and fastest doorslammer in the World. The current doorslammer elapsed time record stands at 6.001 and belongs to Bill Kuhlmann.
"The race to the five-second zone is alive and well, and no offense to our Aussie friends, we'd like for the first run to be here in the States," explained Bennett, who witnessed the first six-second doorslammer run in 1988. "I am a fan of the quickest and fastest Pro Modified runs that can be produced. I think that this special program can and will create a lot of talk in the class."
Richard Kearby, C.E.O. of InfiNet Insurance & Financial Service, was sold on the idea when he first heard of the concept.
"There's no doubt that Pro Modified is the class to be in if you want the media spotlight," explained Kearby, also a major sponsor on Mike Ashley's Pro Modified 1941 Willys. "I get a rush every time I watch this class run and to sponsor an event that allows these guys to take all the rules off and run wide open just sends chills up my spine. This is going to be awesome."
Outside of the standard safety regulations, all entries must follow minimal regulations. All entrants must have a suspended chassis and be either left or right-hand driven. All entries must have a conventional piston driven engine, which rules out jet-car or rocket motors. Outside of those regulations, contestants can run unlimited cubic inches, have no minimum weight, can run any size tire, unlimited clutch discs, any gear, any power adder and can run gasoline, methanol or nitromethane.
The format of the program will be unique in that all entrants will make two single passes and the quickest four from those sessions will be granted a third attempt. The quickest elapsed time will pocket the $5,000 bounty courtesy of the InfiNet Insurance & Financial Network.
Immediately following the event on Saturday afternoon, Tarpit Records' recording artists Slur will treat event attendees to a concert featuring their full-throttle rock and roll. Their website can be accessed at www.slur.com.
Full event rules will be posted on www.competitionplus.com.
