ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - George Howard and Steve Earwood, who 20 years ago teamed up to create the Racers Appreciation Bracket Series and the Million Dollar Drag Race, will reunite July 4th weekend at Rockingham Dragway for an old-style, big money bracket race that could put $40,000 in the pocket of one standout racer.

"Bracket Racers Independence Day at The Rock" will pay $20,000 to the Saturday winner in Top Eliminator and $20,000 more to the Sunday winner. In addition, champions will be crowned daily in Footbrake and Jr. Dragster.

"George was the king of the big money races in the '90s," Earwood said of the man he calls "Big Daddy."

"That was another era, but we still stay in touch and when we were talking the other day, he said, 'how about we do another big money race? I think everybody's ready.' Well, crazy as it sounded, the more we talked, the more I liked the idea of exposing a whole new generation of racers to the way it was back in the heyday."

For five years, Earwood and Howard produced the Million Dollar Drag Race which paid a winner's purse far exceeding anything paid out to a single winner in one of the major professional series.

"Just like always, the big money race each day will be open to any and all vehicles," Earwood said. "Top ET, Footbrake, sportsmen, motorcycles. I guess if you wanted to run your Top Fuel dragster, 'Big Daddy' would find a place for that, too."

The track will be open starting Thursday for parking. Friday's time trials will conclude with a "Run for the Money" tune-up at 6 p.m. that will pay $1,000 to win. Saturday's racing for the $20,000 top prize begins promptly at 10 a.m. Sunday's $20,000 race will start at 10:30 a.m.

Admission is $50 for any or all days. There is no extra fee for car entry and parking is free in Rockingham's main lot. Children 12 and under are free when accompanied by a ticketed adult.

All competition will be on The Rock's eighth mile course with coupes and sedans separated from dragsters for the first six rounds each day. Footbrake racers will compete each day for a $1,000 top prize and Jr. Dragster drivers for a $250 winner's share.
