Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 54th annual Circle K NHRA Winternationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 4.213/253.04, Now #13; Best prior run: 9.209/63.97, Was #21

4:37 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 65 degrees, relative humidity 53 percent, barometer 29.07 inches, adjusted altitude 1,925 feet, track temperature 79 degrees.

Cruz Pedregon is on the bump spot at 5.010.

Haddock was 13th at the end of qualifying last night with a 4.358 and would be in the field already. He makes a less than stellar pass with a faster speed at the 660 lights, but that time puts him into the field in the #13 position for now.

Terry Haddock's incremental times: 60ft-0.917 sec., 330ft-2.361, 660ft-3.354/257.68 mph.

Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 4.241/264.29, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.473/64.71, Was #20
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.049/312.86, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.629/78.19, Was #21

Bob Tasca III is on the bump spot at 4.529.

One last chance for the Valvoline Charger. This has been a tough weekend for the young team. Rob Flynn saves the best for last! A strong 0.889 sixty foot time gives the momentum to push the car into the current top half of the field. Nice!

Bode makes best pass too with a near full pull. The engine isn't happy on the top end and there is Stuff on the track.

Bob Bode's incremental times: 60ft-0.924 sec., 330ft-2.367, 660ft-3.380/252.43 mph.
Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.889 sec., 330ft-2.301, 660ft-3.267/267.53 mph.

4:41 p.m. Trucks are rolling!

Left Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 6.064/123.96, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.602/104.61, Was #21
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.991/114.20, Now #17; Best prior run: 4.258/245.58, Was #17

4:49 p.m. Time for more noise! Bob Bode is on the bump spot at 4.241.

No joy for either team. Diehl is up in smoke first, quickly followed by Pedregon. Lots of pedal pumping from both drivers and then it all goes silent.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.001/311.49, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.010/150.82, Was #19
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.150/316.23, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.233/296.05, Was #15

These two are usually in the top half of the field at this point. Wilkerson is in and Pedregon isn't.

Both cars are taking no prisoners and power off the line together. Wilkerson gives the pedal a quick slap right off the line and keeps the candles lit all the rest of the way to move into the current #13 spot.

Pedregon HP pushes the Camry right on down the track and into the top four on a great pass.

Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.891 sec., 330ft-2.287, 660ft-3.223/273.27 mph.
Tim Wilkerson's incremental times: 60ft-0.909 sec., 330ft-2.392, 660ft-3.373/266.27 mph.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.132/311.20, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.529/194.27, Was #19
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.147/300.00, Now #14; Best prior run: 4.179/301.67, Was #15

Terry Haddock is on the bump spot at 4.213.

A great side by side pass for both cars. Just 0.002 difference in sixty foot times and 0.015 in the lights. That should set the field.

Bob Tasca III's incremental times: 60ft-0.903 sec., 330ft-2.353, 660ft-3.344/262.74 mph.
Gary Densham's incremental times: 60ft-0.901 sec., 330ft-2.335, 660ft-3.332/255.10 mph.

Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 4.396/203.80, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.069/316.82, Was #9

Paul Lee is on the bump spot at 4.162 and will stay there, as the rest of the cars in the lanes are already in the field.

Johnson's Make-A-Wish Charger has a great leave and runs hard to near the 660 lights. He has to lift after that.

Tommy Johnson Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.894 sec., 330ft-2.303, 660ft-3.314/231.75 mph.

Left Lane: Chad Head Runs 4.394/207.24, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.079/303.23, Was #11
Right Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.891/161.79, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.046/320.13, Was #7

Force has a strong start and then the Mustang drives out of the groove towards the centerline and loses traction.

Head keep the tires stuck with better incrementals until after the 330 lights and then struck the tires too.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.352/209.98, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.077/316.01, Was #10
Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 5.319/136.93, Now #3; Best prior run: 3.997/318.32, Was #3

No joy here.

DeJoria stricks the tires about 300 feet out followed right after that by Hagan right after the 660 lights.. They will sat in their current spots on the ladder.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 8.532/79.57, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.040/317.27, Was #6
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.013/319.67, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.996/317.94, Was #2

Both cars have only make one full pass.

Hight makes it two out of four with another great looking pass. A little slower than last night, but strong none the less.

Worsham has the slicks spinning right after the 60 foot lights and slows.

Robert Hight's incremental times: 60ft-0.895 sec., 330ft-2.299, 660ft-3.247/272.23 mph.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 6.056/108.87, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.014/304.67, Was #5
Right Lane: John Force Runs 6.806/105.13, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.966/324.12, Was #1

Last professional qualifying passes for the weekend!

It's anticlimactic, as both cars are up in smoke right after the 60 foot lights.

5:14 p.m. Paul Lee stays on the bump spot at 4.162.
