By David Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Results of round 1 eliminations in Top Fuel at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals:

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
21 Terry McMillen 34 Morgan Lucas
E1 0.057 4.969 145.61 ****WINNER**** 0.061 3.793 325.22
 Qualified: #11 3.814 324.28 #6 3.782 320.20
11:01 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 26 percent, barometer 29.01 inches, adjusted altitude 2,396 feet, track temperature 92 degrees.

Lucas is 4 - 2 against McMillen in prior events. Lucas is running his last race for a while and has a three to one first round advantage over McMillen.

Lucas is second off the line by just a tad, but McMillen's tires are smoking right before the 330 lights.

Strong pass for Lucas to set a mark for the rest of the field.

255 Clay Millican 497 Troy Buff
E1 ****WINNER**** 0.084 3.791 325.30 0.077 9.993 77.20

Millican won the only other time these two have met in eliminations.

Buff strikes the tires right off the line and Millican power on down the course for the easy win.

He will have lane choice over Lucas by just 0.002 in round two, but both lanes look equal right now.

Clay Millican's incremental times: 60ft-0.839 sec., 330ft-2.146, 660ft-3.046/283.79 mph.

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
474 Billy Torrence 5 Brandon Bernstein
E1 0.078 8.151 83.24 ****WINNER**** 0.110 4.410 222.07
 Qualified: #16 3.903 305.42 #1 3.748 325.37
This is the first time Torrence and Bernstein have faced each other in eliminations.

Two smokers this time. Torrance gets off the line first, but quickly is up in smoke.

Brandon's car left hard and then started to shake and spin at the 330 lights. He pumps and gets back into the throttle to get a time on the board.

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
475 Steve Torrence 4 Shawn Langdon
E1 0.067 17.243 44.03 ****WINNER**** 0.048 3.781 322.42
 Qualified: #15 3.835 321.65 #2 3.750 327.03
This will break the ties in overall wins in both round one and total. 3-3 and 6-6, so far.

Torrence smokes the tires like his dad and then bangs the blower. Torrance will end the season in the number ten spot.

Langdon's pass was almost perfect, as he runs the best run of the session, so far.

Shawn Langdon's incremental times: 60ft-0.837 sec., 330ft-2.136, 660ft-3.033/285.17 mph.

 Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-----Car#-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT----ET---Speed
2 Tony Schumacher 22 Doug Kalitta
E1 0.040 5.441 133.99 ****WINNER**** 0.058 3.757 328.70
 Qualified: #13 3.821 323.81 #4 3.762 326.08
Schumacher struggled in qualifying, but has a career 39 to 27 advantage over Kalitta. He has a 8 to 5 advantage in round one.

Schumacher is away first and leads Kalitta to about 200 feet out. The tires start to smoke and he is on and off the throttle to no avail.

Kalitta was long gone by that point and runs the quickest ET of the session and the fastest speed of the weekend.

Doug Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.846 sec., 330ft-2.140, 660ft-3.023/287.90 mph.

8 Bob Vandergriff 1 Antron Brown
E1 0.091 9.300 85.11 ****WINNER**** 0.050 3.762 324.75
 Qualified: #12 3.815 322.42 #5 3.775 322.42
Brown is 12 - 4 against Vandergriff in prior events. Brown has a 6-4 win advantage in round one match ups.

Once again the left lane bites. Vandergriff was second off the line, but the tires are quickly up in smoke and his season is over.

Brown makes the second quickest pass of the session and still give up lane choice in round two to Kalitta.

Antron Brown's incremental times: 60ft-0.841 sec., 330ft-2.129, 660ft-3.017/284.75 mph.

99 Khalid alBalooshi 44 David Grubnic
E1 0.077 4.250 205.47 ****WINNER**** 0.099 3.839 309.70
 Qualified: #10 3.806 323.43 #7 3.783 318.92
alBalooshi and Grubnic have only met in round one in prior races. alBalooshi has a three to one advantage.

alBalooshi looks to be on a winning pass with a better leave and good early numbers. He stays out in front until after the 330 lights and then has the slicks come loose.

Grubnic flies on down the track and then has a big blower BANG right before the lights. That will give lane choice to Langdon next round.

Khalid alBalooshi's incremental times: 60ft-0.849 sec., 330ft-2.155, 660ft-3.183/226.85 mph.
David Grubnic's incremental times: 60ft-0.832 sec., 330ft-2.144, 660ft-3.062/274.61 mph.

3 Spencer Massey 745 Brittany Force
E1 0.064 4.763 224.21 ****WINNER**** 0.061 4.594 188.25
 Qualified: #9 3.799 317.64 #8 3.784 323.74
Massey is 4 - 1 against Force in prior events. Massey has a 2-1 advantage in round one match ups. Force's only win was at the recent Las Vegas race.

Force uses the family pedalfest knowledge wisely. She is off the line first by just 0.003 and is just 0.004 ahead at sixty feet.

Massey strikes the tires right after that and starts pumping the throttle. Force gets to near the 330 lights and joins him in smoking the tire. She has the momentum and squeezes the pedal just right to ensure an easy win.

Bernstein keeps lane choice with a stellar 4.410!

Spencer Massey's incremental times: 60ft-0.852 sec., 330ft-2.368, 660ft-3.669/191.46 mph.
Brittany Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.851 sec., 330ft-2.198, 660ft-3.432/201.46 mph.
