Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Session #2

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 3.815/322.42, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.949/143.64, Was #14
Right Lane: Todd Paton Runs 6.817/94.69, Now #17; No Prior Run

3:07 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 23 percent, barometer 28.84 inches, adjusted altitude 3,043 feet, track temperature 95 degrees.

Steven Chrisman is on the bump spot at 4.230.

Paton strikes the tires right off the line and has to lift.

Vandergriff gets a full pass this time and moves well up the ladder into the top half of the field. Nice!

Bob Vandergriff's incremental times: 60ft-0.846 sec., 330ft-2.158, 660ft-3.063/281.01 mph.

Right Lane: Steve Torrence Runs 3.829/326.00, Now #8; Best prior run: 10.239/70.63, Was #18

Troy Buff is on the bump spot at 3.934.

Torrance goes from the bottom of the ladder to the top eight on a quick pass. He runs the fastest pass of the weekend too.

Chrisman is up in smoke off the line and lifts.

Steve Torrence's incremental times: 60ft-0.836 sec., 330ft-2.175, 660ft-3.085/282.19 mph.

Left Lane: Billy Torrence No Time, Now #13; Best prior run: 3.918/305.63, Was #12
Right Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 3.812/319.60, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.916/113.32, Was #17

Billy Torrence is on the bump spot at 3.918, but won't improve, as the dragster is shut off after the burnout with a broken driveline.

Strong pass for Bernstein with just a little puff of smoke from the engine in the lights. That moves him up to the top half of the field.

Brandon Bernstein's incremental times: 60ft-0.849 sec., 330ft-2.153, 660ft-3.057/280.49 mph.

Left Lane: Brittany Force Runs 3.787/323.19, Now #3; Best prior run: 3.843/312.86, Was #10
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 3.819/322.58, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.999/140.90, Was #17

Side by side to the finish line.

Force makes a career best pass to move her up the ladder seven positions to the number three spot. Not her best speed, but a great looking pass.

Schumacher was away first and ran just 0.001 slower to sixty feet. A strong pass to the finish line moves the Army car into the field in the #9 spot.

Brittany Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.844 sec., 330ft-2.141, 660ft-3.041/283.79 mph.
Tony Schumacher's incremental times: 60ft-0.845 sec., 330ft-2.161, 660ft-3.067/280.54 mph.

Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 3.790/324.28, Now #4; Best prior run: 3.824/323.50, Was #10
Right Lane: Khalid alBalooshi Runs 3.806/323.43, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.391/185.66, Was #17

Two more strong passes.

alBalooshi has better number to near the 330 lights, but Kalitta is stronger to the finish line and moves up to the top four.

alBalooshi picks up ten positions to number seven.

Doug Kalitta's incremental times: 60ft-0.845 sec., 330ft-2.153, 660ft-3.045/284.56 mph.
Khalid alBalooshi's incremental times: 60ft-0.840 sec., 330ft-2.159, 660ft-3.059/283.13 mph.

Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 3.800/323.19, Now #6; Best prior run: 3.812/321.50, Was #8
Right Lane: Troy Buff Runs 3.877/306.40, Now #15; Best prior run: 3.934/278.46, Was #16

...and the hits keep coming!

Buff is away first, but can't match Millican's pace. He finishes well. One spot up the ladder.

Millican has a strong leave and a clean finish and moves up into the top half of the field.

Clay Millican's incremental times: 60ft-0.848 sec., 330ft-2.155, 660ft-3.051/282.36 mph.
Troy Buff's incremental times: 60ft-0.858 sec., 330ft-2.168, 660ft-3.089/271.30 mph.

Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 3.782/320.20, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.801/318.24, Was #7
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 3.814/324.28, Now #10; Best prior run: 3.871/319.90, Was #14

Steve Torrence is on the bump spot at 3.829.

Strong pass for Lucas from start to finish, with the best 60 foot time of the session. He misses the top spot by just 0.010 to take number two.

McMillen finds some tune up too and bumps into the field on a clean pass. He is the new #10 qualifier.

Morgan Lucas' incremental times: 60ft-0.832 sec., 330ft-2.130, 660ft-3.030/282.54 mph.
Terry McMillen's incremental times: 60ft-0.849 sec., 330ft-2.166, 660ft-3.067/282.54 mph.

Left Lane: David Grubnic Runs 7.730/70.84, Now #6; Best prior run: 3.792/321.88, Was #6
Right Lane: Spencer Massey Runs 3.799/317.64, Now #7; Best prior run: 3.856/317.49, Was #14

Grubnic scores a strong sixty foot time, but can't stay connected to the track after that. Lots of smoke and he is done.

Straight and true to the finish line for Massey and a number seven spot on the ladder for now.

David Grubnic's incremental times: 60ft-0.839 sec., 330ft-2.485, 660ft-4.738/090.99 mph.
Spencer Massey's incremental times: 60ft-0.854 sec., 330ft-2.157, 660ft-3.046/284.15 mph.

Left Lane: Shawn Langdon Runs 3.750/327.03, Now #1; Best prior run: 3.772/322.27, Was #1
Right Lane: Antron Brown Runs 3.775/322.42, Now #2; Best prior run: 3.787/323.74, Was #3

Bob Vandergriff is on the bump spot at 3.815 and will stay there until tomorrow.

What a great pair of passes to wrap up Top Fuel qualifying!

Langdon lays down the best numbers of the session to push the top spot further away from the rest of the field.

Brown makes a better pass too and moves back into the number two spot on the ladder.

Antron Brown's incremental times: 60ft-0.845 sec., 330ft-2.140, 660ft-3.026/283.85 mph.
