By Larry Sullivan

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jonnie Lindberg Runs 6.351/259.26, Now #20; No Prior Run

1:29 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 20 percent, barometer 28.88 inches, adjusted altitude 2,924 feet, track temperature 106 degrees.

A couple of snippets re: Jonnie Lindberg, courtesy of Andy Rogers (Tog), News Editor, Eurodragster.com. "Jonnie is reigning European Top Alcohol FC Champion and holds both ends of the European record at 5.426/268.86. He (yep Jonnie is a guy) and brother Johan run a two-car team in Europe and Jonnie tunes both cars. Before the move to TAFC Johan was European Pro Mod Champion." Jonnie's car is a former Frank Manzo Monte Carlo, by the way.

This time Lindberg spun the tires hard. He backpedaled, got it hooked up, and ran a ludicrous speed for the ET.

Jonnie Lindberg's incremental times: 60ft-1.114 sec., 330ft-3.148, 660ft-4.434/198.09 mph, 1,000ft-5.479.

Left Lane: Nick Januik Runs 11.732/69.73, Now #22; Best prior run: 15.014/80.93, Was #23
Right Lane: Ulf Leanders Runs 5.814/258.17, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.986/138.27, Was #21

Leanders has been 5.51 and 263.50 at home, almost matched that at Las Vegas last weekend.

Januik launched into severe tire shake. He tried to backpedal to get through it and the rear of the car went left, then right, taking out the 330-foot timing reflector. Leanders spun, recovered, and finished the run.

By the way, Jason Rupert is on the bump spot at 5.727.

Left Lane: Bret Williamson Runs 9.358/110.54, Now #22; Best prior run: 11.949/83.63, Was #23

Wiliamson lost traction almost immediately.

Left Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.669/254.23, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.031/172.89, Was #20
Right Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.696/252.14, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.694/256.89, Was #15

Both cars were a bit loose and Hough got close to the cewnterline, but neither driver lifted. Gordon bumped into the field, putting Hough on the bump spot.

Doug Gordon's incremental times: 60ft-0.950 sec., 330ft-2.515, 660ft-3.740/201.67 mph, 1,000ft-4.784.
Brian Hough's incremental times: 60ft-0.982 sec., 330ft-2.537, 660ft-3.757/202.52 mph, 1,000ft-4.806.

Left Lane: Bernie Harrington Runs 5.781/245.27, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.862/244.03, Was #20

Harrington improved slightly, did not make it into the field. Hool could not improve over yesterday's run, stayed 14th.

Bernie Harrington's incremental times: 60ft-0.975 sec., 330ft-2.539, 660ft-3.792/197.48 mph, 1,000ft-4.866.
Kris Hool's incremental times: 60ft-0.975 sec., 330ft-2.580, 660ft-3.820/201.67 mph, 1,000ft-4.859.

Right Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 5.659/258.76, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.632/251.77, Was #12

Two nice runs, Rupert bumping Hough from the field. Doug Gordon is on the bump spot at 5.669.

Jason Rupert's incremental times: 60ft-0.946 sec., 330ft-2.511, 660ft-3.731/203.00 mph, 1,000ft-4.769.
Mark Woznichak's incremental times: 60ft-0.980 sec., 330ft-2.546, 660ft-3.760/204.57 mph, 1,000ft-4.789.

Right Lane: Sean Bellemeur Runs 5.572/258.37, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.620/257.28, Was #9

Steve Harker is the only driver outside the field who has not run yet and his car may be broken.

Kaplan's car headed for the centerline. He backpedaled and it headed for the centerline again, so he lifted. Bellemeur made a very nice run to put the top half of the field in the fifties, with the bottom half all in the sixties.

Left Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 10.077/129.93, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.626/259.96, Was #11
Right Lane: Cody Perkins Runs 5.616/257.63, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.599/258.76, Was #8

Gasparrelli's car shook hard, then lost traction. Perkine made a clean run, right down the groove, but not quite as quick as yesterday's.

Cody Perkins' incremental times: 60ft-0.966 sec., 330ft-2.508, 660ft-3.715/205.60 mph, 1,000ft-4.745.

Right Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 5.530/260.01, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.568/258.42, Was #4

Smith's car was dancing around a bit, Whiteley's was on a string. Both improved and moved up Whiteley taking over the #1 spot, Smith the ninth driver in the fifties so far.

Von Smith's incremental times: 60ft-0.959 sec., 330ft-2.506, 660ft-3.705/206.86 mph, 1,000ft-4.725.
Annie Whiteley's incremental times: 60ft-0.946 sec., 330ft-2.459, 660ft-3.648/208.04 mph, 1,000ft-4.666.

Left Lane: Shane Westerfield Runs 7.667/120.05, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.614/243.28, Was #10
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 9.408/110.08, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.568/263.00, Was #4

Both cars shook immediately. Bartone threw in the towel, but Westerfeld tried to backpedal. No dice, he shook again and lifted.

Left Lane: Frank Manzo Runs 5.534/264.86, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.578/262.59, Was #7
Right Lane: Clint Thompson Runs 5.597/259.61, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.563/259.91, Was #3

Frank Manzo's incremental times: 60ft-0.945 sec., 330ft-2.483, 660ft-3.673/209.30 mph, 1,000ft-4.683.
Clint Thompson's incremental times: 60ft-0.971 sec., 330ft-2.511, 660ft-3.710/206.48 mph, 1,000ft-4.731.

Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.606/252.28, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.570/258.81, Was #6
Right Lane: John Lombardo Jr. Runs 5.704/256.65, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.557/260.66, Was #3

Last pair of the session.

Both runs looked pretty good, but both drivers lost ET compared with their runs yesterday, Lombardo losing a lot of ground to Payne in the first half of the run.

Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-0.955 sec., 330ft-2.488, 660ft-3.686/207.11 mph, 1,000ft-4.719.
