Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #2

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 49th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Gord Gingles Runs 8.684/95.77, Now #19; Best prior run: 8.684/95.77, Was #19

12:34 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 20 percent, barometer 28.88 inches, adjusted altitude 2,924 feet, track temperature 106 degrees.

Gingles leaves and then has a bunch of shake. The car steps left and he has to lift.


Left Lane: Garrett Bateman Runs 5.363/270.32, Now #5; Best prior run: 12.049/79.40, Was #21
Right Lane: Larry Miersch Runs 5.534/251.58, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.767/245.67, Was #17

Two good passes.

Bateman gets a full pass and moves into the field.

Miersch is dropping cylinders at the top end and still picks up three spots on the ladder and into the field.

Garrett Bateman's incremental times: 60ft-0.935 sec., 330ft-2.432, 660ft-3.576/219.29 mph, 1,000ft-4.538.
Larry Miersch's incremental times: 60ft-0.948 sec., 330ft-2.500, 660ft-3.673/214.01 mph, 1,000ft-4.662.

Left Lane: Ashley Sanford Runs 12.140/79.44, Now #21; Best prior run: 11.505/79.22, Was #21
Right Lane: Brooks Brown No Time, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.615/246.84, Was #18

William Litton is on the bump spot at 5.563.

Brown gets pushed away and Sanford is up in smoke at the green.

Left Lane: Casey Grisel Runs 5.634/261.78, Now #19; Best prior run: 5.903/253.85, Was #19
Right Lane: Greg Hunter Runs 5.463/242.84, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.571/263.56, Was #17

Hunter has a little shake and runs on down the track into the field in the number twelve spot on the ladder. It's expensive

Grisel improves all of the numbers, but stays number nineteen

12:45 p.m. Time out for some dusting and cleaning after the finish line.

Left Lane: William Litton Runs 5.637/260.86, Now #17; Best prior run: 5.563/255.82, Was #17
Right Lane: Jeff Ashwell Runs 5.641/254.95, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.557/257.19, Was #16

12:56 p.m. Back to qualifying. Jeff Ashwell is on the bump spot at 5.557 and looking to move up the ladder.

Ashwell takes the long way down, as the car moves out of the groove near the 330 lights and moves towards the center line. He fights the car and finally drives back to the middle well after mid-track. That costs him some performance.

Litton goes from A to B without any drama and stays number seventeen for now.; One more chance later.

William Litton's incremental times: 60ft-0.989 sec., 330ft-2.593, 660ft-3.787/210.80 mph, 1,000ft-4.784.
Jeff Ashwell's incremental times: 60ft-0.952 sec., 330ft-2.495, 660ft-3.717/202.61 mph, 1,000ft-4.759.

Left Lane: Shawn Cowie Runs 5.396/268.28, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.407/269.94, Was #8
Right Lane: Johnny Ahten Runs 5.484/259.01, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.489/247.70, Was #14

Both cars make strong passes and improve a little. They stary in their current spots though.

Ahten looked to have some dead holes near the light and still picks up a bunch of speed.

Shawn Cowie's incremental times: 60ft-0.942 sec., 330ft-2.416, 660ft-3.573/214.11 mph, 1,000ft-4.559.
Johnny Ahten's incremental times: 60ft-0.976 sec., 330ft-2.503, 660ft-3.657/217.21 mph, 1,000ft-4.633.

Left Lane: Michael Manners Runs 5.509/259.21, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.386/269.94, Was #7
Right Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.556/261.22, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.467/261.98, Was #13

Both cars are off the pace a little and Shields has some wet pipes in the lights.

Michael Manners' incremental times: 60ft-0.966 sec., 330ft-2.512, 660ft-3.681/215.55 mph, 1,000ft-4.658.
Duane Shields' incremental times: 60ft-0.969 sec., 330ft-2.544, 660ft-3.721/215.44 mph, 1,000ft-4.705.

Left Lane: Don St. Arnaud Runs 5.451/269.83, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.367/271.57, Was #6
Right Lane: Ross Stickler Runs 5.453/260.46, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.453/257.68, Was #11

Stickler matches his earlier best to the thousands and picks up some speed.

St. Arnaud slows a little on the top end.

Don St. Arnaud's incremental times: 60ft-0.967 sec., 330ft-2.501, 660ft-3.653/217.60 mph, 1,000ft-4.623.
Ross Stickler's incremental times: 60ft-0.950 sec., 330ft-2.405, 660ft-3.580/209.14 mph, 1,000ft-4.593.

Left Lane: Chris Demke Runs 9.783/83.10, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.291/271.57, Was #4
Right Lane: Ray Martin Runs 5.386/262.90, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.442/261.93, Was #10

A little shake and rattle off the line for Demke and he lifts.

Martin finds some good speed and ET, but it may be expensive, as there is a huge wall of smoke in the lights. He moves into the top half of the field.

Ray Martin's incremental times: 60ft-0.930 sec., 330ft-2.387, 660ft-3.549/213.37 mph, 1,000ft-4.539.

1:11 p.m. More clean up in the left lane after the lights.

Left Lane: Mark Taliaferro Runs 11.213/71.50, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.282/271.02, Was #3
Right Lane: Megan McKernan Runs 5.503/268.17, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.429/268.54, Was #10

1:22 p.m. More qualifying!

Taliaferro is spinning the tires hard at the green and has to lift.

Strong pass for the conditions for McKernan to stay #10.

Megan McKernan's incremental times: 60ft-1.017 sec., 330ft-2.555, 660ft-3.704/218.72 mph, 1,000ft-4.671.

Right Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 10.053/76.05, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.223/275.62, Was #1

Best sixty foot time of the session [0.908], but the tires are spinning right after that. Whiteley lifts and won't improve.

1:31 p.m. Jeff Ashwell is on the bump spot at 5.557.
