Top Fuel Harley Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel Harley at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Pacific Division, Las Vegas Gambler Showdown Division 7 Finale listing lane, rider name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Mike Ruggerio Runs 9.325/145.39, Now #1

3:00 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 27 percent, barometer 28.04 inches, adjusted altitude 3,611 feet, track temperature 98 degrees.

Ruggerio had the front wheel firmly planted before going 330 feet and he cruised through.

Left Lane: Randal Andras Runs 7.731/130.22, Now #2
Right Lane: Steve Ruggiero Runs 7.249/164.61, Now #1

Andras was leaning way to the left to stay off the centerline. Both riders were off the power by half track.

Left Lane: Tony Ruggiero Runs 28.581/74.33, Now #5
Right Lane: Mike Pelrine Runs 6.736/169.04, Now #1

Ruggerio smoked the tire, then coasted through, almost stopping before crossing the stripe. Nice pass by Pelrine to about 1,000 feet, then he slowed after running 4.254/175.14 at half track.

Left Lane: Andy Beauchemin Runs 6.967/231.08, Now #2
Right Lane: Steve Heidner Runs 7.750/125.73, Now #5

Beauchemin was leaning to the right, the bike trying to go toward the wall. He lost a lot of time in the first 330 feet, then the bike made a hard charge the rest of the way.

Left Lane: Damian Cownden Runs 14.341/97.08, Now #8
Right Lane: Douglas Lidgett Runs 8.105/189.07, Now #6

Cownden spun the tires, never did get it up to speed. Lidgett had a lot of early tire spin, then hooked up, but went to the left and had to back off.

Left Lane: Kevin Boyer Runs 9.197/108.34, Now #8
Right Lane: Mike Pelrine Runs 6.551/208.14, Now #1

Boyer got almost to half track, then the engine went silent. Pelrine was back on the wheelie bars a long way down the track on the first really competitive run we've seen so far.

Mike Pelrine's incremental times: 60ft-1.181 sec., 330ft-2.997, 660ft-4.399/164.25 mph, 1,000ft-5.545. Kevin Boyer's incremental times: 60ft-1.190 sec., 330ft-3.084, 660ft-5.084/108.93 mph, 1,000ft-7.186.

Left Lane: Mark Cox Runs 6.361/214.86, Now #1

Cox also made a nice, competitive run, and he's now in the #1 spot.

Mark Cox's incremental times: 60ft-1.114 sec., 330ft-2.859, 660ft-4.167/180.65 mph, 1,000ft-5.329.

Left Lane: Mike Scott Runs 6.478/205.13, Now #3
Right Lane: Jay Turner Runs 6.374/217.21, Now #2

Nice side-by-side race here, just what the spectators were looking for.

Mike Scott's incremental times: 60ft-1.136 sec., 330ft-2.907, 660ft-4.239/197.25 mph, 1,000ft-5.414.
Jay Turner's incremental times: 60ft-1.116 sec., 330ft-2.851, 660ft-4.197/205.47 mph, 1,000ft-5.366.

Left Lane: Doug Horne Runs 6.295/227.50, Now #1
Right Lane: Tommy Grimes Runs 6.309/233.92, Now #2

This is another classy matchup, two tough competitors, and the result was just what you'd ec=xpect, the two quickest and fastest runs of the session. Horne had the better run, but Grimes got the win light.

Doug Horne's incremental times: 60ft-1.124 sec., 330ft-2.865, 660ft-4.179/169.17 mph, 1,000ft-5.299.
Tommy Grimes' incremental times: 60ft-1.145 sec., 330ft-2.884, 660ft-4.209/188.73 mph, 1,000ft-5.339.
