Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session

LAS VEGAS - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 13th annual NHRA Toyota Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Josh Crawford Runs 4.345/267.22, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.110/162.68, Was #21

4:38 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 88 degrees, relative humidity 20 percent, barometer 27.92 inches, adjusted altitude 4,617 feet.

Crawford went right down the groove, was off the throttle about 900 feet out, but still managed to run quicker than he ever has, but not quick enough to stay in the show.

Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 4.341/287.72, Now #16; Best prior run: 4.752/186.48, Was #20
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.317/287.90, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.956/161.75, Was #21

Haddock was mixing up cylinders late in the run but managed to run quick enough to get in the show on the bump. Densham was mixing up cylinders late but made his quickest pass of the weekend to get in the show in the 15th spot for now.

Left Lane: Todd Lesenko Runs 5.036/156.01, Now #21; Best prior run: 4.607/260.36, Was #21
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.143/309.13, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.409/225.41, Was #19

Lesenko got out of the groove, started moving toward the centerline and breaks the tires loose. He backs off the throttle quickly and will not make the show. Tasca went right down the groove with his quickest pass of the weekend and gets in the show in the 12th spot, bumping out Haddock.

Left Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 7.060/72.58, Now #20; Best prior run: 4.411/221.60, Was #20
Right Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 4.372/263.56, Now #19; Best prior run: 4.384/271.84, Was #19

Diehl has problems early backs off the throttle. Burkart improves but doesn't make the field.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.685/177.81, Now #15; Best prior run: 4.167/264.86, Was #14
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.114/303.37, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.207/296.05, Was #15

Pedregon has traction problems late and has to back off the throttle. Arend makes his quickest pass of the weekend and moves up to the ninth spot for now.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.060/311.85, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.159/307.30, Was #14
Right Lane: Chad Head Runs 4.064/315.64, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.100/310.70, Was #8

Gray drifts a little to the right, then back to the left, but stays on the throttle and makes his quickest pass of the weekend to move up to the third spot. Head makes his quickest pass of the weekend and moves up to the fifth spot for now.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.086/313.07, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.137/311.85, Was #13
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.011/317.79, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.085/308.99, Was #8

Force makes an impressive pass, right down the groove, and he sets the track ET record and takes the pole for now. Hight makes a good run but was falling behind at every marker.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.125/301.47, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.123/307.02, Was #13
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.122/292.46, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.080/306.46, Was #8

Worsham makes a decent pass but doesn't improve. Wilkerson's engine was putting out a little smoke as he went through the lights.

Left Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.383/214.66, Now #12; Best prior run: 4.118/309.63, Was #12
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.064/310.55, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.064/316.01, Was #5

DeJoria started hazing the tires late, the car started moving around and she backed off the throttle. Pedregon made a good run but did not improve.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.057/315.05, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.097/312.86, Was #10
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.092/311.70, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.052/315.56, Was #3

Capps makes his quickest pass of the weekend and moves up to the fourth spot. Beckman makes a clean pass but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.057/312.50, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.078/313.00, Was #8
Right Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.061/314.53, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.052/318.24, Was #2

Force makes a clean, straight pass but can't take back the top spot from her dad. Hagan ties Capps for the second quickest pass of the round.
