Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #3

LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 13th annual NHRA Toyota Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.589/185.31, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.085/308.99, Was #6

1:29 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 87 degrees, relative humidity 22 percent, barometer 28.00 inches, adjusted altitude 4,491 feet.

Force gets about 500 feet out, starts hazing the tires, then backs off the throttle.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 4.956/161.75, Now #14; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.159/307.30, Now #12; No Prior Run

Densham gets about 400 feet out and goes up in smoke. Gray makes his quickest pass of the weekend and gets in the show for now.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.409/225.41, Now #14; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 4.411/221.60, Now #15; No Prior Run

Tasca was on a decent pass, then starts moving around about 600 feet out and has to back off the throttle. Diehl's car nosed over early, not sure why.

Left Lane: Josh Crawford Runs 5.110/162.68, Now #18; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 4.752/186.48, Now #16; No Prior Run

Crawford had a couple of cylinders out on the right side at the hit, starts moving to the right, then backs off the throttle about 600 feet out. Haddock has traction problems about 700 feet out and has to back off the throttle early. He gets in the show on the bump for now.

Left Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 4.384/271.84, Now #14; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Todd Lesenko Runs 4.607/260.36, Now #17; No Prior Run

Lesenko gets about 300 feet out, strikes the tires and the pipes go wet. Burkart goes right down the groove on a mediocre pass but gets in the show in the 14th spot.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.207/296.05, Now #14; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.146/310.84, Now #11; Best prior run: 4.137/311.85, Was #11

A good side-by-side here, both right down the groove. Arend makes his quickest pass of the weekend and gets in the show in the 14th spot for now. Hight doesn't improve and stays in the 11th spot.

Left Lane: Chad Head Runs 6.022/110.13, Now #8; Best prior run: 4.100/310.70, Was #8
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.449/131.65, Now #13; Best prior run: 4.167/264.86, Was #13

Head gets about 300 feet out and goes up in smoke. Pedregon gets a few feet further and strikes the tires.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.130/310.27, Now #5; Best prior run: 4.080/306.46, Was #5
Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.118/309.63, Now #9; Best prior run: 4.125/308.78, Was #10

Two good passes here, they were glued together all the way through the run. DeJoria improves and moves up a spot to ninth. Worsham doesn't improve and stays in the fifth spot.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.977/153.56, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.064/316.01, Was #3
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 6.979/93.04, Now #10; Best prior run: 4.123/307.02, Was #10

Pedregon was on a good run but overpowered the track and struck the tires about 400 feet out. Wilkerson had problems about 300 feet out and was off the throttle early.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.137/308.50, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.052/315.56, Was #2
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.550/126.77, Now #7; Best prior run: 4.097/312.86, Was #7

Capps gets about 300 feet out and goes up in smoke. Beckman goes right down the groove with a good looking run but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.339/221.89, Now #1; Best prior run: 4.052/318.24, Was #1
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.120/302.55, Now #4; Best prior run: 4.078/313.00, Was #4

Force was on a good pass but lost traction about 300 feet out and had to give up on the run. Hagan made a clean pass but did not improve.
