Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 13th annual NHRA Toyota Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Josh Crawford Runs 14.120/39.30, Now #1

2:06 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 87 degrees, relative humidity 22 percent, barometer 27.92 inches, adjusted altitude 4,573 feet.

Crawford goes up in smoke as soon as he hit the throttle and gives up on the run.

Left Lane: Jeff Diehl Runs 6.435/106.89, Now #2
Right Lane: Phil Burkart Runs 4.318/239.27, Now #1

Diehl rattles the tires and backs off the throttle about 300 feet out. Burkart was on a decent pass but blew the engine just before the 660 foot mark.

Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 4.399/280.08, Now #2
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 5.751/123.86, Now #3

Densham started moving around early in the run and lost traction about 300 feet out. Haddock was moving around all the way through the run.

Left Lane: Todd Lesenko Runs 4.400/271.24, Now #3
Right Lane: Chad Head Runs 4.871/166.23, Now #4

Head gets about 400 feet out, hazes the tires and has to back off the throttle. Lesenko gets about 700 feet out and a flash of flames comes from under the car.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.278/238.85, Now #1
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 5.557/123.95, Now #6

Arend goes up in smoke about 300 feet out and gives up on the run. Pedregon gets about 800 feet out and a flash of flames come from the engine.

Left Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.496/206.67, Now #5
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 7.278/83.26, Now #10

Tasca gets about 200 feet out, strikes the tires and backs off the throttle. DeJoria was on a decent pass but had problems about 700 feet out.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.324/144.69, Now #8
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.111/312.50, Now #1

Wilkerson gets about 300 feet out and goes up in smoke. Worsham is able to make a full pass and takes the top spot for now.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.210/301.20, Now #2
Right Lane: Courtney Force Runs 5.009/160.90, Now #9

Force gets about 400 feet out, strikes the tires and backs off the throttle. Gray makes a full pass and moves into the second spot.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.402/212.26, Now #7
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 5.194/147.67, Now #11

Pedregon gets about 400 feet out and goes up in smoke. Capps makes it about 700 feet and is out of power.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.137/311.85, Now #3
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.120/307.65, Now #2

We finally get a good side-by-side run, the first of this session. Beckman and Hight were glued together all the way through the run with Beckman getting across the line just in front of Hight.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.807/168.41, Now #12
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.085/308.99, Now #1

Force is the current points leader and he shows why on this pass. He goes right down the groove without a hint of tire smoke and takes the pole to end this session. Hagan gets about 400 feet out goes up in smoke.
