Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

BRAINERD, Minn. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 32nd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Bob Bode Runs 5.535/129.10, Now #1
Right Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 6.785/102.28, Now #2

3:29 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 80 degrees, relative humidity 40 percent, barometer 28.81 inches, adjusted altitude 3,279 feet, track temperature 116 degrees.

For the first time this weekend, the thunder of blown nitro engines fills the air - but only for a couple seconds. Both cars started rattling the tires, then lost traction about 300 feet out.

Left Lane: Chad Head Runs 5.026/153.39, Now #1
Right Lane: Blake Alexander Runs 5.400/137.04, Now #2

These two got a little farther down the track, but started hazing the tires at 400 feet and lifted.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 7.227/84.01, Now #6
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.511/199.88, Now #1

Pedregon shook early and lifted, Arend got to about 400 feet, then hazed the tires and lifted.

Left Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 6.013/113.46, Now #6
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.148/303.98, Now #1

DeJoria's car shook, moved to the left, and she lifted. Worsham's run looked very good, the first to go all the way to the stripe under power.

Del Worsham's incremental times: 60ft-0.900 sec., 330ft-2.352, 660ft-3.347/260.11 mph.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.743/172.39, Now #4
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.239/267.75, Now #2

The left lane gets another one, Hight with good early numbers, then tire smoke before half track. Tasca appeared to be under power all the way, but his speed is down and he probably coasted the last couple hundred feet.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 6.309/105.65, Now #10
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.114/306.53, Now #1

Wilkerson is sporting Circle-K colors this weekend, a one-race dal. Beckman, by contrast, has Don Schumacher's name on the side of his car this weekend, a Hall of Fame" tribute.

Nice, full pass for Beckman to take over to top spot. Wilkerson had a good launch, but was off the throttle before half track.

Jack Beckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.902 sec., 330ft-2.328, 660ft-3.317/261.42 mph.

Left Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.125/309.63, Now #2
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.130/304.12, Now #3

It ain't the lane! These two were side-by-side all the way down the track, neither car showing any sign of a problem.

Courtney Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.890 sec., 330ft-2.327, 660ft-3.329/258.52 mph.
Johnny Gray's incremental times: 60ft-0.899 sec., 330ft-2.335, 660ft-3.326/259.21 mph.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.129/295.01, Now #3
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.197/252.19, Now #6

Looked like two full passes from here, but we don't have a good view of the top end and Capps' speed is down, indicating an early shutoff.

John Force's incremental times: 60ft-0.891 sec., 330ft-2.319, 660ft-3.312/258.22 mph.
Ron Capps' incremental times: 60ft-0.882 sec., 330ft-2.315, 660ft-3.316/256.31 mph.

Bob Bode is on the bump spot at 5.535.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.626/180.36, Now #10
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.122/306.26, Now #2

Both cars had good early numbers, but Pedregon pulled the plug around half track. Hagan was under power all the way and took over the #2 spot with a nice run.

Cruz Pedregon's incremental times: 60ft-0.891 sec., 330ft-2.309, 660ft-3.401/204.88 mph.
Matt Hagan's incremental times: 60ft-0.900 sec., 330ft-2.331, 660ft-3.323/259.76 mph.
