By Dave Rowe

NORWALK, Ohio - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, Seventh annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Chad Head Runs 4.146/307.72, Now #1

5:32 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 83 degrees, relative humidity 58 percent, barometer 29.15 inches, adjusted altitude 3,291 feet, track temperature 105 degrees.

Pedregon had a cylinder out on the left side at the hit, rattles the tires early and clicks it off about 150 feet out. Head was moving around a little late in the run but made a pretty good pass to set the early pace.

Left Lane: Blake Alexander Runs 4.543/195.90, Now #3
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 4.150/303.50, Now #2

Alexander gets about 600 feet out and the candles go out. Arend goes right down the groove with a clean pass.

Left Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.192/302.62, Now #3
Right Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.204/300.33, Now #4

A good side-by-side, both went right down the groove, hitting on all cylinders all the way through the run. DeJoria moves into the third spot, Tasca to fourth.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.088/312.93, Now #1
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.119/308.35, Now #2

Worsham did his burnout and the engine made a loud noise, not sure what it was. it didn't seem to be anything significant, Worsham right down the groove to get in the second spot. Hight made a clean straight pass to move into the top spot for now.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.147/301.07, Now #5
Right Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.106/312.86, Now #2

Wilkerson makes a decent pass but looks like he was mixing up the cylinders a little about 800 feet out. Force goes right down the groove with a clean pass to move into the second spot for now.

Left Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.142/306.46, Now #4
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.145/306.74, Now #5

Two more good runs, both down the middle of the track, header flames high and steady on both cars. Beckman gets in the fourth spot, Capps just behind in the fifth spot.

Left Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.148/305.08, Now #9
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.139/306.53, Now #4

Force makes a clean pass and gets in the fourth spot for now. Gray is the fifth driver this round to run a 4.14, but it's also the slowest 4.14 of the five, and he gets in the ninth spot for now.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.091/303.43, Now #2
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.105/308.64, Now #3

Pedregon makes a nice pass to get in the second spot, Hagan just behind in the third. Overall a pretty good session for the floppers.
