Hard Luck Turns into Two Wins for Pocaro at VW Race

MOHNTON, Pa. - Getting ready to go to the VW June Bug Classic at Maple Grove Raceway, it appeared Scott Pocaro wasn't having too much luck.

He was going to race a VW-powered dragster during Sunday's event, but the machine was broken and he left it at home. However, the racer from Summit, N.J., still wanted to participate and rented a VW Passat.

Pocaro's bad luck then took a 180-degree turn with that rental car. Not only did he win the Pro class, he also took the Bracket class.

The 26th edition of the VW June Bug Classic featured racing, and a huge car show. Presented by Ulrich's VW Sales & Services and 4 Ever Kustoms, the car show drew dozens of entries from around the region and awards were presented in 50 classes.

Also on hand were the ATI Stock-Super Stock Series, with the second of four races at The Grove this summer, and the Race for Ronald McDonald's House charity race.

Pocaro defeated Rick Lazar (Bethlehem, Pa.) in the Pro class, making a pass of 11.153 seconds at 56.64 mph down the quartermile. He was .16 over his dial-in, while Lazar and his '65 Beetle broke out by .02.

In the Bracket class, Pocaro beat Austin Boop (York, Pa.) with a run of 17.346 at 65.08 that was ..52 over the dial, but got the advantage over Boop and his '92 Jetta with a superior reaction time.

The other VW class was I/Gas with Tim Vinkuns (Binghamton, N.Y.) taking the win light over Austin Johnson III (Baltimore, Md.). In a '73 Beetle, Vinkuns cruised to an easy win when Johnson fouled at the start.

The ATI Stock-Super Stock Series, which features the popular NHRA door slammer class, completed its first race of the season after Saturday's race was stopped for track conditions.

Dan Walleigh (Reading, Pa.) didn't have to come too far to collect the victory. His run of 11.109 at 109.69 in a '70 AMX was good enough to beat Kevin Fogerty (Chalfont, Pa.) in the final, as he was .019 over his dial in. Reaction time made a difference as Walleigh launched in just .048 and Fogerty was .071. Fogerty was .015 over his dial, but that was wiped out.

The Race For Ronald's House benefits the Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia and is run by Denny Parisan from County Corvette in West Chester, Pa.

There was a field of 30 cars for the event and Irvin Gring (Reading, Pa.) took the final win light in a '79 Corvette. The victory was in hand when runner-up Brock Yates (Phoenixville, Pa.) fouled at the start.

Racing returns to Maple Grove Raceway this weekend with three different events. Auto Locator Grudge Racing kicks it off on Friday night; the Sunoco Race Fuels Money Trail returns on Saturday; and Pontiacs at The Grove on Sunday.
