NORWALK, Ohio - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, North Central Division, Mickey Mart Rewards Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Mike Kosky No Time, Now #13; Best prior run: 8.961/91.24, Was #13
8:27 p.m. - Kosky started his car and just started his burnout when he popped the supercharger and the chutes were deployed.
Left Lane: John Paul Gutierrez Runs 11.436/109.32, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.676/252.10, Was #9
Right Lane: Don Nolan Runs 5.867/246.30, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.014/240.64, Was #12
This is Gutierrez's first NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster event, having earned his license just two weeks ago. Neither he nor Nolan will make the field this weekend. Gutierrez's car shook the rear tires as soon as he launched and he clicked it off. Nolan had his best run of the weekend but was not quick enough to make the field.
Left Lane: Dave Hirata Runs 11.564/108.66, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.540/260.61, Was #8
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.419/263.05, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.929/229.43, Was #12
Reichert was in the unusual position of being out of the field heading into the final qualifying session. Well, he saved his best for last and had a strong run down the groove to move into the third spot in the qualifying order. Hirata's car shook the tires out of the gate and he clicked it off, getting bumped from the field in the process.
Left Lane: Jeff Veale Runs 5.619/268.54, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.503/269.83, Was #7
Right Lane: William Litton Runs 12.997/66.06, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.838/249.21, Was #11
Litton was not in the field and needed a good run to make it into the top eight. When his car launched, the tires spun and he trailed heavy tire smoke for 330 feet. He pedaled it once, then clicked it off. Veale did not improve his spot in the order but with no non-qualified drivers in the staging lanes, he is safely in the field.
Left Lane: Robin Samsel Runs 5.402/256.70, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.429/258.86, Was #5
Right Lane: Paul Fishburn Runs 5.645/257.43, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.532/256.55, Was #8
Samsel had his quickest run of the three qualifying sessions to move up two spots in the order. Fishburn had a good, clean run but will stay in the number eight spot in the order.
Left Lane: Marty Thacker Runs 5.455/255.43, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.419/261.47, Was #5
Right Lane: Ken Perry Runs 5.425/262.39, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.467/262.90, Was #6
Thacker carried the front wheels a foot in the air from 100 feet to midtrack. Neither he nor Perry improved their place in the order.
Left Lane: Kyle Michalek Runs 19.676/55.95, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.398/259.86, Was #2
Right Lane: Brandon Booher Runs 5.403/268.65, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.386/267.59, Was #1
The stands are still full here today and people are standing three and four deep on the railing as TAD qualifying ended here this evening. Booher had a nice run down the groove. Michalek launched, pulled the front wheels in the air, smoked the rear tires and clicked it off.
