NORWALK, Ohio - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, North Central Division, Mickey Mart Rewards Cavalcade of Stars presented by Budweiser listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: John Paul Gutierrez Runs 5.800/249.58, Now #1
7:31 p.m. - This is Gutierrez's NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster debut, having gained his license two weeks ago. The 23-year old driver got way out of the groove and moved toward the wall, but he stayed on the throttle to finish the run.
Left Lane: Kyle Michalek Runs 5.398/259.86, Now #1
Right Lane: Don Nolan No Time, Now #3
Nolan and crew had some trouble getting his car started. Michalek waited a bit, then did his burnout. Nolan got the car started after Michalek finished his burnout, and did a long burnout of his own. Nolan staged first, then rolled through the beam before the tree was activated.
Left Lane: Jeff Veale Runs 5.503/269.83, Now #2
Right Lane: Paul Fishburn No Time, Now #5
Both drivers did their burnouts but Fishburn was not able to get his car into reverse and had to go down the track without making his run. He cruised down the track and the chutes automatically deployed after he crossed the finish line while Veale waited at the starting line. Fishburn got off the track, so Veale made his run and used up a lot of his lane in the process.
Left Lane: Mike Kosky Runs 8.961/91.24, Now #4
Right Lane: William Litton Runs 11.005/78.60, Now #5
Both cars launched, both had problems coming off the starting line and both drivers clicked their cars off right away. Kosky coasted just a little bit quicker.
Left Lane: Dave Hirata Runs 12.612/105.89, Now #7
Right Lane: Brandon Booher Runs 5.386/267.59, Now #1
Hirata smoked the tires coming off the starting line and clicked it off at 60 feet. Booher had a nice run down the groove to take the top spot in the order for now.
Left Lane: Robin Samsel Runs 5.467/261.83, Now #4
Right Lane: Ken Perry Runs 5.467/262.90, Now #3
These two were side-by-side the whole way down the track and had identical ETs. Perry was a bit faster so he gets the higher spot in the order.
Left Lane: Marty Thacker Runs 5.449/264.29, Now #3
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.929/229.43, Now #8
Reichert shook the tires coming off the starting line and pedaled the throttle at about 100 feet. Thacker had a clean run down the track to take over the number three spot in the order.
