Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #1

TOPEKA, Kan. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 25th annual NHRA Kansas Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Shayne Lawson Runs 5.536/252.85, Now #1

Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 62 percent, barometer 28.75 inches, adjusted altitude 3,451 feet, track temperature 106 degrees.

Lawson was dropping cylinders early, but stayed with it...


Left Lane: Aaron Tatum Runs 5.826/248.71, Now #2
Right Lane: Mark Taliaferro No Time, Now #3

Taliaferro was staging the car when all of a sudden it lost power. It appeared that Tatum's car was dancing around a little just past half track.

Left Lane: Monroe Guest Runs 5.537/246.57, Now #2
Right Lane: Alan Bradshaw No Time, Now #5

Bradshaw was able to get the car to fire...Guest with a clean pass to start the weekend.

Left Lane: Edwin Schmeeckle Runs 5.674/245.58, Now #4
Right Lane: Michael Manners Runs 5.564/262.23, Now #3

This was a good looking side-by-side drag race as these two go to the number four and five spots. Edwin Schmeeckle's incremental times: 60ft-0.959 sec., 330ft-2.475, 660ft-3.700/201.10 mph, 1,000ft-4.762.
Michael Manners' incremental times: 60ft-0.997 sec., 330ft-2.559, 660ft-3.728/214.83 mph, 1,000ft-4.715.

Left Lane: James Thompson Runs 5.396/267.80, Now #1
Right Lane: Larry Miersch No Time, Now #9

Miersch with problems on the burnout and drove it off the top end. Thompson launched hard and was straight down the groove to go to the number one spot. James Thompson's incremental times: 60ft-0.939 sec., 330ft-2.455, 660ft-3.600/219.22 mph, 1,000ft-4.566.

Left Lane: Brandon Pierce Runs 5.424/266.69, Now #2
Right Lane: Buddy Domingue Runs 13.970/82.62, Now #8

Domingue is up in smoke as soon as he hit the throttle and clicked off and coasted on through the 1320. Pierce with good looking pass to go to the number two spot. Brandon Pierce's incremental times: 60ft-0.974 sec., 330ft-2.479, 660ft-3.622/219.40 mph, 1,000ft-4.590.

Left Lane: Aaron Olivarez Runs 5.477/257.43, Now #3
Right Lane: Gord Gingles Runs 5.549/259.96, Now #6

This was a good looking drag race...Olivarez goes to the number three spot. Aaron Olivarez's incremental times: 60ft-0.973 sec., 330ft-2.503, 660ft-3.650/218.48 mph, 1,000ft-4.624. Gingles is into the top half of the show. Gord Gingles' incremental times: 60ft-1.020 sec., 330ft-2.556, 660ft-3.716/216.45 mph, 1,000ft-4.697.

Left Lane: Forrest Fair Runs 5.760/245.05, Now #10
Right Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.551/250.64, Now #7

shields was dropping cylinders early but stayed with it. Duane Shields' incremental times: 60ft-0.956 sec., 330ft-2.500, 660ft-3.671/214.04 mph, 1,000ft-4.670. Fair with a clean pass. Forrest Fair's incremental times: 60ft-0.993 sec., 330ft-2.589, 660ft-3.815/204.54 mph, 1,000ft-4.855.

Left Lane: Rich McPhillips Runs 5.490/258.42, Now #5
Right Lane: Chris Demke Runs 5.413/266.42, Now #2

Demke with a great looking pass to go to the number two spot. Chris Demke's incremental times: 60ft-0.938 sec., 330ft-2.418, 660ft-3.576/213.06 mph, 1,000ft-4.569. McPhillips with a good looking pass to get in the top half of the show. Rich McPhillips' incremental times: 60ft-0.984 sec., 330ft-2.510, 660ft-3.658/217.67 mph, 1,000ft-4.638.
