Funny Car Round 1 Eliminations

COMMERCE, Ga. - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 33rd annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals:

11:28 a.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 79 degrees, relative humidity 60 percent, barometer 29.20 inches, adjusted altitude 2,899 feet, track temperature 104 degrees.

This is the first time DeJoria and Wilkerson have faced each other in eliminations.

DeJoria gets out of the gate first but strikes the tires about 100 feet out. She pedals a couple of times but can't get the slicks to bite and has to give up on the run. Wilkerson went right down the groove to take the win.

Pedregon is 11 - 8 against Arend in prior events.

Arend gets about 100 feet out and hazes the tires. He rolls for a few feet, gets back on the throttle but loses traction again. Pedregon makes a clean pass and takes the win.

Hagan is 9 - 6 against Pedregon in prior events.

This is Matt Hagan's first number one spot since the end of the 2011 season. He becomes the 20th Funny Car driver in the 33 year history of this race to qualify number one.

Pedregon gets off the line first then both he and Hagan strike the tires about 200 feet out. they both pedal, Hagan regains traction, Pedregon continues to smoke the tires and has to back off the throttle. hagan drifts out of the groove, gets close to the centerline near the end of the run, then crosses the centerline after the finish line.

Matt Hagan's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.045), 330 ft(0.023), 660ft(0.449). MOV: 1.5098 seconds (more than 100 feet).

Capps is 1 - 0 against Alexander in prior events.

This is Ron Capps' best start of the year. Ron's first final round came at this race in 1995 and it was in TF when he lost to Cory McClenathan.

Capps gets the advantage off the line and starts to pull away. Alexander starts drifting to the left but he is able to steer the car back toward the groove. Capps continues to pull away and takes the win.

Tasca gets about 200 feet out, goes up in smoke and has to back off the throttle. he pedals a couple of times, can't get traction and finally gives up on the run. Beckman goes right down the groove and pulls away for the win.

Beckman will have lane choice over Wilkerson in the next round.

Worsham and Force have each won 1 times against the other in prior events.

Force gets of the line first, gets about 300 feet out and goes up in smoke. Worsham drove around her quickly and pulled away for the win.

Worsham will give up lane choice to Cruz Pedregon in the next round.

Hight is 9 - 5 against Gray in prior events.

Gray and Hight come off the line together, Gray starts inching ahead, then Hight goes up in smoke about 300 feet out. Hight backs off the throttle and gives up on the run as Gray pulls away for the win.

Capps will have lane choice over Gray in the next round.

This is the first time Force and Head have faced each other in eliminations.

This is John Force's 31st race in Atlanta, a race he has won 7 times, but not since 2005.

Head leaves way too early and backs off the throttle quickly. Force was a little late, has traction problems about 300 feet out and backs off the throttle.

Force will give up lane choice to Hagan in the next round.
