Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

COMMERCE, Ga. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 33rd annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Jon Capps Runs 4.532/272.94, Now #1

3:12 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 82 degrees, relative humidity 48 percent, barometer 29.29 inches, adjusted altitude 2,918 feet.

Capps was a little sluggish off the line but picked up later in the run.


Left Lane: Chad Head Runs 4.167/299.86, Now #1
Right Lane: Blake Alexander Runs 4.293/290.19, Now #2

Head goes right down the groove and takes the early pole. Alexander made a clean pass but was falling behind Head all the way through the run.

Left Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 5.080/172.34, Now #5
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.232/286.92, Now #2

Arend hazes the tires about 200 feet out, pedals, then strikes the tires and has to give up on the run. Pedregon made a clean pass and gets in the second spot for now.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.117/310.20, Now #1
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 11.784/69.17, Now #7

Worsham makes a move to the right at the hit and has to back off the throttle. Force makes a clean pass and moves to the top spot for now.

Left Lane: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.184/302.62, Now #3
Right Lane: Alexis DeJoria Runs 4.195/299.06, Now #4

Tasca drifted to the left early in the run but was able to stay on the throttle and get in the third spot for now. DeJoria went right down the groove with a decent pass to move into the fourth spot.

Left Lane: Robert Hight Runs 4.101/313.66, Now #1
Right Lane: Jack Beckman Runs 4.184/302.62, Now #5

Hight makes an impressive pass, sets the track speed record and takes the top spot for now. Beckman went right down the groove but was falling behind all the way through the run.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 4.123/301.87, Now #3
Right Lane: Johnny Gray Runs 4.161/303.37, Now #4

A good side-by-side, both went right down the groove. Wilkerson gets in the field in the third spot, Gray right behind in the fourth spot.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 4.150/305.22, Now #5
Right Lane: Courtney Force Runs 4.100/314.61, Now #1

Force started moving around late in the run but hangs on to take the top spot and takes the track speed record from Hight.. Capps made a clean pass and was able to get in the field in the fifth spot for now.

Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 4.138/305.29, Now #5
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.485/204.08, Now #14

Pedregon gets out of the groove, gets very close to the wall about 700 feet out and has to back off the throttle. Hagan makes a clean pass and gets in the field in the fifth spot.
