Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

BAYTOWN, Texas - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 26th annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Monroe Guest Runs 5.452/257.04, Now #1
Right Lane: Brandon Pierce Runs 7.090/131.82, Now #2

2:48 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 66 percent, barometer 30.14 inches, adjusted altitude 1,867 feet, track temperature 115 degrees.

There was a flash of flame from the top of Pierce's engine before half track and he slowed.

Clean run for Guest, but he should be quicker next time out.

Left Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 5.765/259.66, Now #2
Right Lane: James Thompson Runs 14.898/78.59, Now #4

Thompson "boiled the hides." bradshaw got a clean alunch, but the car moved over toward the wall and he lifted briefly to steer it back.

Left Lane: Michael Manners Runs 8.575/241.76, Now #4
Right Lane: Buddy Domingue Runs 9.196/111.02, Now #5

If this was eliminations, it would have been a pedaling contest. Both were up in smoke more than once.

Left Lane: Aaron Olivarez Runs 5.483/266.32, Now #2
Right Lane: Bill Evans Runs 6.123/228.58, Now #4

Clean pass for Olivarez to move into the #2 spot. Evans dropped a cylinder immediately and labored down the track.

Left Lane: Lee Callaway Runs 10.250/76.44, Now #8
Right Lane: David Brounkowski No Time, Now #10

Brounkowski's car was shut off on the line. Callaway launched, shook, and lifted.

Left Lane: Forrest Fair Runs 5.444/254.90, Now #1
Right Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.827/236.38, Now #5

Fair goes to the top of the list with a clean mid-forties run. Shields shook and dropped a cylinder early in the run.

Left Lane: Rich McPhillips Runs 5.551/257.92, Now #5
Right Lane: Randy Meyer Runs 5.428/236.17, Now #1

This started out to be a good drag race, but McPhilips hazed the tires at half track and it looked from here like Meyer's chutes came out a little early.

Left Lane: Chris Demke Runs 5.362/266.06, Now #2
Right Lane: Jim Whiteley Runs 5.268/274.39, Now #1

Last pair and finally we get a couple of clean, competitive runs. Those times won't set any records, but they are easily the best two runs of the session.
