Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

BAYTOWN, Texas - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, 26th annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Steve Burck Runs 5.898/221.89, Now #1
Right Lane: Mark Billington Runs 21.530/33.59, Now #2

Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 66 percent, barometer 30.14 inches, adjusted altitude 1,867 feet, track temperature 115 degrees.

Billington with violent tire shake right at the hit and clicked it off. Burck was straight down the groove, but clicked it off early.


Left Lane: Bryan Brown Runs 5.741/252.24, Now #1
Right Lane: Jirka Kaplan Runs 8.307/112.08, Now #3

Kaplan shook early and clicked it off. Brown with a nice pass, he did have some engine smoke in the lights, but word from the top end is everything is clean.

Left Lane: Mickey Ferro Runs 5.608/258.96, Now #1
Right Lane: Terry Ruckman Runs 5.729/258.42, Now #2

This was a good side-by-side drag race...Mickey Ferro's incremental times: 60ft-0.957 sec., 330ft-2.509, 660ft-3.713/206.04 mph, 1,000ft-4.740.
Terry Ruckman's incremental times: 60ft-1.017 sec., 330ft-2.603, 660ft-3.821/204.79 mph, 1,000ft-4.856.

Left Lane: Ray Drew Runs 5.808/255.29, Now #5
Right Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 5.599/259.26, Now #1

Gasparrelli is straight down the groove with his fastest pass of the season. He goes to number one for now. Steve Gasparrelli's incremental times: 60ft-0.958 sec., 330ft-2.502, 660ft-3.708/206.61 mph, 1,000ft-4.733. Drew with a good clean pass to get in the top half of the show.

Left Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.747/257.87, Now #5
Right Lane: Todd Veney Runs 5.821/251.25, Now #7

Payne was skating around, but stayed with it to get in the top half of the show. Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-0.990 sec., 330ft-2.594, 660ft-3.830/202.24 mph, 1,000ft-4.871. Veney with a clean pass to get in the show. Todd Veney's incremental times: 60ft-1.024 sec., 330ft-2.610, 660ft-3.862/199.29 mph, 1,000ft-4.927.

Left Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.566/263.87, Now #1
Right Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 5.619/260.91, Now #4

Bartone launched hard and was straight down the groove to go to the number one spot. Tony Bartone's incremental times: 60ft-0.973 sec., 330ft-2.508, 660ft-3.697/209.79 mph, 1,000ft-4.711. Whiteley with her fastest pass of the season and she goes to the number four spot. Annie Whiteley's incremental times: 60ft-0.991 sec., 330ft-2.533, 660ft-3.732/207.40 mph, 1,000ft-4.755.

Left Lane: John Lombardo Jr. Runs 5.578/259.66, Now #2
Right Lane: Shane Westerfield Runs 5.590/260.01, Now #3

This was a great side-by-side drag race to wrap up the first round. Lombardo Jr. goes to the number two spot and Westerfield goes to the number three spot. John Lombardo Jr.'s incremental times: 60ft-0.951 sec., 330ft-2.498, 660ft-3.694/207.53 mph, 1,000ft-4.713.
Shane Westerfield's incremental times: 60ft-0.975 sec., 330ft-2.507, 660ft-3.704/207.98 mph, 1,000ft-4.725.
