Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1

CONCORD, N.C. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, Fourth annual Dollar General NHRA Four-Wide Nationals fueled by Full Throttle listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Lane 4: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 6.257/122.38, Now #1

1:25 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 66 degrees, relative humidity 29 percent, barometer 29.48 inches, adjusted altitude 1,307 feet, track temperature 104 degrees.

Creasy gets about 200 feet out and has problems.


Lane 1: Blake Alexander Runs 4.261/294.75, Now #2
Lane 2: Chad Head Runs 4.014/315.19, Now #1
Lane 3: Jeff Arend Runs 4.609/181.42, Now #4
Lane 4: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.305/228.07, Now #3

Head makes an impressive pass, going right down the groove with a career best pass to take the top spot for now.

Alexander makes a clean run to get in the second spot for now. Pedegon has problems late in the run and the car noses over.


Lane 1: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.162/167.80, Now #7
Lane 2: John Force Runs 4.039/316.08, Now #2
Lane 3: Bob Tasca III Runs 4.162/307.16, Now #3
Lane 4: Alexis DeJoria Runs 10.240/85.18, Now #9

Wilkerson had traction problems about 200 feet out, pedaled once, then clicked it off.

Force made a clean pass, his quickest of the year, and gets in the second spot for now.

Tasca went right down the groove and gets in the third spot for now.

DeJoria went up in smoke at the hit and had to abort the run.


Lane 1: Jack Beckman Runs 4.071/311.99, Now #3
Lane 2: Robert Hight Runs 6.139/116.46, Now #10
Lane 3: Del Worsham Runs 8.923/88.46, Now #12
Lane 4: Ron Capps Runs 4.319/219.72, Now #7

Worsham goes up in smoke quickly and has to back off the throttle.

Hight gets a little further, pedals once and aborts the run.

Capps gets out of shape late in the run and backs off the throttle.

Beckman makes a full pass and gets in the third spot for now.


Lane 1: Matt Hagan Runs 4.460/251.16, Now #8
Lane 2: Cruz Pedregon Runs 10.161/73.28, Now #16
Lane 3: Johnny Gray Runs 7.564/81.83, Now #14
Lane 4: Courtney Force Runs 4.533/190.65, Now #9

Cruz goes up in smoke at the hit and backs off the throttle.

Gray gets a little further, loses traction and gives up on the run.

Force was on a good pass but had problems late in the run and the car nosed over.

Hagan lost power just before the finish line.
