Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session

LAS VEGAS - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Pacific Division, event at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.738/252.99, Now #9; Best prior run: 9.905/100.24, Was #16
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 6.814/133.10, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.892/249.58, Was #12

9:32 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 74 degrees, relative humidity 25 percent, barometer 27.92 inches, adjusted altitude 3,412 feet.

Down to the last opportunity to get into the tough field: Mark Woznichak is on the bump spot at 5.710.

Hough hasn't been able to get to the finish line under power yet. He finally gets down the track, but it just not good enough to bump into the field. He misses the current bump by 0.028 seconds.

Payne has a good leave, but has the blower go bang again before half track. He will stay #12 for now and not in the field.


Left Lane: Hannes Wernhart No Time, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.567/188.17, Was #16
Right Lane: Bernie Harrington Runs 5.993/241.15, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.883/243.68, Was #12

Wernhart won't make the show, as he is a no show again.

Harrington's engine belched a bunch of smoke when it was started. Well, that a valiant effort, but to no avail. He chatters the tires at the launch and has the car drive right towards the wall. He does a quick pedal and then fights the front end all the way to the finish line, as the car runs right along the wall and keeps nosing towards it.

Left Lane: Mike Drake No Time, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.249/235.47, Was #15
Right Lane: Nick Januik Runs 5.793/249.12, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.832/246.08, Was #11

Drake is still looking for a full pass. He bring up the revs and lunges through the beams. He shuts it off and stops by the wall.

Once again, local racer, Januik improves his career bests. Unfortunately, it not enough to get him in the tough field. Terrific effort by the team, with big improvements on each pass. Well done!

Nick Januik's incremental times: 60ft-0.986 sec., 330ft-2.580, 660ft-3.827/199.17 mph, 1,000ft-4.890.

Left Lane: Dave Germain Runs 10.950/84.63, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.019/240.21, Was #14
Right Lane: Jirka Kaplan Runs 5.709/253.04, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.767/250.32, Was #10

9:49 p.m. Drake's car was locked up on the track and it took a while to get it loose and back behind the starting line.

Last two that can bump into the field and Kaplan runs well down the track and bumps out The Woz by just 0.001 seconds!

Germain's car shook and spun right off the line and he had to lift.

Jirka Kaplan's incremental times: 60ft-0.987 sec., 330ft-2.542, 660ft-3.772/201.82 mph, 1,000ft-4.821.

Left Lane: Shane Westerfield Runs 5.664/254.66, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.700/254.57, Was #7
Right Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 14.671/76.63, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.710/251.95, Was #9

Woznichak has one last chance to bump back into the field. After that the bottom of the field is set. It's all over at the green, as the slicks are smoking hard within ten feet.

Westerfield was in the seventh spot and wanted to be sure not to end up on the bump. He leaves well and powers on down the track into the new number two spot, splitting Whiteley and Barton. Strong!

Shane Westerfield's incremental times: 60ft-0.961 sec., 330ft-2.524, 660ft-3.743/203.68 mph, 1,000ft-4.782.

Left Lane: Terry Ruckman Runs 5.670/255.48, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.697/255.15, Was #7
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.672/251.91, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.681/252.47, Was #6

They run together down the track with Gordon having the better incrementals all the way past the 1000 ft lights. Ruckman has a little better top end power and squeezes past Gordon on the ladder. This will be a first round match up, if nothing changes...

Terry Ruckman's incremental times: 60ft-0.963 sec., 330ft-2.525, 660ft-3.748/202.33 mph, 1,000ft-4.790.
Doug Gordon's incremental times: 60ft-0.969 sec., 330ft-2.517, 660ft-3.735/202.70 mph, 1,000ft-4.780.

Left Lane: Jason Rupert Runs 11.622/69.74, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.674/255.10, Was #6
Right Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 12.100/122.66, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.676/253.42, Was #7

No joy for these two.

Gasparrelli's car shakes off the line and then drives towards the wall.

Rupert gets a little further r out before his car's tires are smoking too.

Left Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 5.734/251.06, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.652/257.53, Was #1
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.642/258.27, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.666/257.24, Was #3

Bartone saves the best for last. Driving on by Whiteley before half track and taking over the final number one spot.

Whitely looked to be on a strong pass too, but the car slowed after mid-track.

Annie Whiteley's incremental times: 60ft-0.958 sec., 330ft-2.529, 660ft-3.778/199.43 mph, 1,000ft-4.838.
Tony Bartone's incremental times: 60ft-0.981 sec., 330ft-2.532, 660ft-3.740/205.22 mph, 1,000ft-4.771.
