Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By David Gerard

LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Pacific Division, event at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Dave Germain Runs 6.019/240.21, Now #2
Right Lane: Jirka Kaplan Runs 5.767/250.32, Now #1

3:10 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 89 degrees, relative humidity 17 percent, barometer 27.94 inches, adjusted altitude 4,360 feet, track temperature 131 degrees.

Kaplan is running a torque converter in his Mustang and it's working well. He leaves with a nice 1.001 sixty foot time and sets a mark for the rest of the field.

Germain's Monte Carlo was a little slower off the line and down the track.

Dave Germain's incremental times: 60ft-1.055 sec., 330ft-2.699, 660ft-3.985/192.99 mph, 1,000ft-5.084.
Jirka Kaplan's incremental times: 60ft-1.001 sec., 330ft-2.570, 660ft-3.808/199.05 mph, 1,000ft-4.872.

Left Lane: Mike Drake Runs 6.249/235.47, Now #4
Right Lane: Nick Januik Runs 5.875/246.03, Now #2

Januik gets off the line well and then takes the long way down to the finish line, as the car drifts steadily towards the guardrail. He slowly straightens it out and runs a career best ET and MPH to take over the early number two spot.

Drake's Avenger was lazy off the line and then had a big move right after the 330 lights. The spill plate goes flying, but he gets the car straightened out and finishes the run,

Mike Drake's incremental times: 60ft-1.081 sec., 330ft-2.812, 660ft-4.160/184.50 mph, 1,000ft-5.296.
Nick Januik's incremental times: 60ft-0.991 sec., 330ft-2.605, 660ft-3.878/195.08 mph, 1,000ft-4.961.

Left Lane: Hannes Wernhart Runs 6.567/188.17, Now #5
Right Lane: Mark Woznichak Runs 57.132/0.00, Now #6

Two broken runs and two banged blowers.

Wernhart shakes and spins at the green. He pedals and gets after it again. The engine isn't happy and the blower goes bang near the lights.

Woznichak has a good initial leave, but has the run abruptly end, as the engine goes South, deploying the chutes. He pulls over to the guard rail and stops before the 330 lights.

3:18 p.m. Time out for some clean up of the fire bottles in the right lane.

Left Lane: Terry Ruckman Runs 12.200/94.24, Now #7
Right Lane: Bernie Harrington Runs 5.883/243.68, Now #3

3:25 p.m. The call goes out to start the engines... This pair will give us our first bump spot.

Ruckman's tune up is too strong for the track and kicks the tires right at the green.

Harrington gets a full pass to tune to and takes over the current number three spot.

Bernie Harrington's incremental times: 60ft-0.993 sec., 330ft-2.591, 660ft-3.868/194.04 mph, 1,000ft-4.960.

Left Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 5.652/257.53, Now #1
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 11.907/100.45, Now #8

Barton's car drives right towards the wall at the green and he has to lift.

Whiteley is clean and straight into the new top spot. Nice pass!

Annie Whiteley's incremental times: 60ft-0.977 sec., 330ft-2.527, 660ft-3.744/203.74 mph, 1,000ft-4.779.

Left Lane: Jason Rupert Runs 5.733/253.42, Now #2
Right Lane: Steve Gasparrelli Runs 11.274/123.60, Now #9

Tony Bartone is on the bump spot at 11.907.

Gasparrelli banged the blower hard on a test pass yesterday, but is back today. The tires are up in smoke before ten feet and he quickly lifts.

Rupert Monte Carlo is strong off the line and runs well into the current number two spot. Stright and clean.

Jason Rupert's incremental times: 60ft-0.967 sec., 330ft-2.548, 660ft-3.790/199.82 mph, 1,000ft-4.845.

Left Lane: Brian Hough Runs 11.448/97.79, Now #10
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 13.142/61.11, Now #13

Hannes Wernhart is on the bump spot at 6.567.

Both cars are in trouble off the line. Hough's Mustang smokes hard at the green and Gordon's Mustang jumps up on the tire, shakes hard, and darts towards the wall. He quickly lifts.

Left Lane: Shane Westerfield Runs 5.713/254.57, Now #2
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.892/249.58, Now #7

We have five of the 2012 Top Ten TAFC's running here this weekend.

Two good passes to wrap session one. Westerfield definitely gets the best of the two, with a straight and true pass right into the final #2 position.

Payne's Mustang was lazy off the line and then started to do some tail wagging down track.

Shane Westerfield's incremental times: 60ft-0.979 sec., 330ft-2.557, 660ft-3.786/201.67 mph, 1,000ft-4.830.
Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-1.028 sec., 330ft-2.654, 660ft-3.924/195.96 mph, 1,000ft-4.991.

3:40 p.m. Dave Germain is on the bump spot at 6.019.
