Nostalgia Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Notes from final, round 2 qualifying in Nostalgia Funny Car at the NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Racing Series 2013, 55th Annual March Meet listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: James Day Runs 5.887/246.48, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.888/243.15, Was #6
Right Lane: John Powers Runs 6.250/185.21, Now #20; Best prior run: 13.300/69.96, Was #30

5:04 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 61 degrees, relative humidity 62 percent, barometer 29.55 inches, adjusted altitude 760 feet, track temperature 59 degrees.

Second and final qualifying session. Dale Van Gundy is on the bump spot at 6.199. It's starting to really cool off now, so the great air will be a challenge with the low track temperature.

Another strong pass for Day, but just 0.001 quicker and a little more than three MPH faster. He will stay #6 for now.

Powers gets to the finish line under power this time and still won't qualify.

James Day's incremental times: 60ft-1.028 sec., 330ft-2.648, 660ft-3.900/196.67 mph, 1,000ft-4.975.
John Powers' incremental times: 60ft-0.993 sec., 330ft-2.706, 660ft-4.002/194.21 mph, 1,000ft-5.128.


Left Lane: Mark Sanders Runs 5.884/249.12, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.892/236.13, Was #7
Right Lane: Shaun Bowen Runs 6.033/234.45, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.241/185.05, Was #19

Sanders is in and Bowen isn't.

Bowen gets a small head start and the two cars run right on down the track together. There is an ominous plume of smoke from his engine, but no oil on the track. He gets in for now in the #14 spot.

Sanders had all of the better incrementals going down the track to move up one spot on the ladder to the current #6 spot for now.

Mark Sanders' incremental times: 60ft-1.015 sec., 330ft-2.651, 660ft-3.914/195.62 mph, 1,000ft-4.986.
Shaun Bowen's incremental times: 60ft-1.042 sec., 330ft-2.689, 660ft-3.982/190.70 mph, 1,000ft-5.087.

Left Lane: Tim Boychuk Runs 5.852/240.25, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.021/244.29, Was #12
Right Lane: Alex Miladinovich Runs 7.817/137.89, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.506/216.83, Was #24

Tom Padilla is on the bump spot at 6.108.

Boychuk's engine wins the battle and loses the war. The car is second off the line, but quickly in front. It runs well until right after the 1000 foot lights and bangs the blower. It's still good enough for a move up six spots on the ladder into the top half of the field in the current #6 spot.

Miladinovich's Mustang has power issues and motors on down the track. He won't make the field.

Tim Boychuk's incremental times: 60ft-0.995 sec., 330ft-2.611, 660ft-3.857/198.38 mph, 1,000ft-4.921.

Left Lane: Richard Townsend Runs 8.029/116.08, Now #28; Best prior run: 7.534/160.81, Was #28
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 11.772/68.18, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.735/245.90, Was #2

5:23 p.m. ,,, and we are back to final qualifying.

Lots of throttle pumping off the line. Both cars squirt off the line and then fight traction problem. Townsend tries to keep going, but the car powers over towards the wall and he has to lift.

Left Lane: Kris Krabill Runs 7.160/146.35, Now #27; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Wayne Mellinger Runs 7.542/88.34, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.218/215.62, Was #19

Another wild pair of Funny Cars.

Mellinger gets a big head start at the green and powers on down the track until just after half track. The car gets a mind of its own and drives towards the guardrail. He fights it and then tags it hard. The car goes on down the track and he's OK. The car? Not so much!

Krabill has his own problems. The car is slower off the line and then starts to drift towards the wall after the 330 lights. He has to give it up and just stays off the wall. He won't qualify.

Left Lane: Robert Overholser Runs 5.869/243.15, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.016/239.91, Was #12
Right Lane: Dennis La Charite Runs 5.907/245.72, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.059/237.80, Was #15

5:44 p.m. No oil, just a bunch of sweeping. The Asphalt Zamboni will makes some passes in both lanes before we go back to qualifying.

Much better! Overholser has a ton of clutch dust from underneath the car on the leave, but there is enough power getting to the track to move him up five spots on the ladder into the top half of the field.

LaCharite runs along right behind him and bumps in to the field in the current #10 spot.

Robert Overholser's incremental times: 60ft-0.976 sec., 330ft-2.574, 660ft-3.853/192.99 mph, 1,000ft-4.945.
Dennis La Charite's incremental times: 60ft-1.020 sec., 330ft-2.646, 660ft-3.907/195.17 mph, 1,000ft-4.992.

Left Lane: Roger Garten Runs 11.906/72.08, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.975/245.09, Was #12
Right Lane: Dwayne Patton Runs 7.339/171.62, Now #28; Best prior run: 8.341/104.75, Was #30

Tom Padilla is on the bump spot at 6.108.

No joy here, as both cars can't keep the tire stuck to the track.

Patton gets off the line first and has a good run going until right after the 330 lights. He pumps the throttle before giving it up. There is smoke from the engine down track, but no oil.

Garten is done right after the 60 foot lights.

Left Lane: Chad Head Runs 11.013/74.22, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.792/252.66, Was #4
Right Lane: Dennis Taylor No Time, Now #29; Best prior run: 7.396/115.93, Was #29

Head has the better numbers down low and then has the car drift over towards the wall and he has to lift.

Taylor's Mustang is soft off the line and runs until near the 1000 foot lights before there is smoke from the engine and he slows. His 6.579 @ 160.94 won't get him in the field, but oil in his lane from right after half track to the finish line will DQ his times.

5:54 p.m. The sweepers are rolling.

Left Lane: Bob Godfrey Runs 14.242/59.61, Now #31; Best prior run: 13.220/69.85, Was #31
Right Lane: Josh Crawford Runs 6.242/221.56, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.529/171.51, Was #25

5:59 p.m. Still more cars to qualify.

Godfrey has the better numbers down low, but over powers the track. He pedals and gets the car very sideways before giving up the chase.

Crawford was way red. He makes a big improvement over his first effort, but won't make the field.

Left Lane: John Hale Runs 5.823/245.49, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.319/218.72, Was #23
Right Lane: Dale Van Gundy Runs 6.037/224.51, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.199/202.18, Was #17

We finally get two full passes an Hale makes the most of it to jump all the way up the ladder from 23 to number five. Great looking pass.

Van Gundy is on a good pass too,but slows on the top end to miss the field by just 0.004! Ouch!

John Hale's incremental times: 60ft-1.004 sec., 330ft-2.604, 660ft-3.855/197.36 mph, 1,000ft-4.921.
Dale Van Gundy's incremental times: 60ft-1.029 sec., 330ft-2.671, 660ft-3.963/192.99 mph, 1,000ft-5.074.

Left Lane: Ed Dougan Runs 12.281/64.21, Now #27; Best prior run: 7.136/161.81, Was #26
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 5.851/248.71, Now #6; No Prior Run

Shaun Bowen is on the bump spot at 6.033.

Dougan hits the throttle, the car bucks, he nails it again, and finally gives up.

Worsham was on a strong pass until the blower went bang near the top end and sent the burst panel flying.

6:08 p.m. No oil, just a quick look for small parts and pieces.

Left Lane: Dan Horan Jr Runs 10.971/75.88, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.851/239.02, Was #7
Right Lane: Jason Rupert Runs 5.731/254.18, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.702/254.47, Was #1

6:13 p.m. It's been dark for a while now and we are getting to see header flames from the FC's. With the small pumps, it's nothing like the Big Show cars.

Horan's Mustang is up in smoke before the 330 lights.

Rupert shows why the team is number one, with another terrific looking pass right on down the track to run the second quickest FC pass of the weekend.

Jason Rupert's incremental times: 60ft-0.986 sec., 330ft-2.561, 660ft-3.794/199.82 mph, 1,000ft-4.846.

Left Lane: Rick Rogers Runs 20.081/38.22, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.213/222.00, Was #20
Right Lane: Jeff Arend Runs 6.388/178.10, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.292/180.02, Was #24

Rogers' car starts to spin the tires at the green. He stays with it way too long and almost nails the guardrail before giving it up.

Arend's Trans Am was soft off the line, but ran well to near the finish line, where the there was a flash of flame and a big bang from the engine.

Neigher car will qualify.

Left Lane: Todd Patton Runs 6.331/201.16, Now #25; Best prior run: 15.190/50.16, Was #33
Right Lane: Nate Bugg Runs 28.433/31.48, Now #34; Best prior run: 17.802/42.64, Was #34

Bugg's tires are spinning at the green.

Patton gets to the finish line under power, but its no where good enough to qualify.

Left Lane: Rian Konno Runs 6.074/222.29, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.021/243.72, Was #16
Right Lane: Garrett Bateman No Time, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.013/235.72, Was #15

Bateman's engine isn't happy and they don't try to do a burnout before shutting it down. Konno will make a single.

He makes another clean pass to stay on the bump spot.

Rian Konno's incremental times: 60ft-1.055 sec., 330ft-2.723, 660ft-4.020/191.27 mph, 1,000ft-5.119.

Left Lane: Mike Cook Jr. Runs 6.374/224.77, Now #26; Best prior run: 6.488/179.02, Was #26

Cook gets a scheduled single. He makes a strong burnout and then has problems finding reverse. After a bit the Mustang starts to slowly back up. He makes a clean, but soft pass and improves to stay in the number twenty-six spot.

Left Lane: Will Martin Runs 8.200/103.95, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.945/210.54, Was #13

Martin is already in the field. I'm told they put a new engine in the car for this session. His car makes a strong leave and is off the throttle before half track.

6:32 p.m. Jason Rupert is number one at 5.702 and Rian Konno is on the bump spot at 6.021.
