Top Fuel Harley Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Larry Sullivan

BAYTOWN, Texas - Notes from final, round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel Harley at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, South Central Division, Showdown at Sundown at Royal Purple Raceway listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Joey Sternotti Runs 10.133/79.29, Now #7; No Prior Run

6:26 p.m. We are behind schedule and it's getting cold very quickly tonight, headed for an overnight low around frezing.

Sternotti did not make a run yesterday. This one was not a good one, the engine struggling, then expiring by half track. However, he got a time good enough to put him in the field, for now.

Left Lane: Jay Turner Runs 6.549/225.22, Now #4; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Brook McCabe Runs 6.799/211.20, Now #6; No Prior Run

Turner did not get down the track yesterday, but he made up for it tonight, with a strong, full pass. McCabe also made a good run, but Turner was far ahead and pulling away.

That bumped Kevin Boyer and Sternotti. Brian Jernigan was supposed to be in the next pair, but broke when they tried to start the engine.

Left Lane: Kevin Boyer Runs 8.305/191.32, Now #9; Best prior run: 12.461/82.70, Was #10

Boyer made a good start and it looked like he was going to get back in, but the engine went away at half track. He tried to stretch it out, but the engine never did recover.

Left Lane: Alvin Kobernausz Runs 8.710/158.17, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.720/138.57, Was #8
Right Lane: Mike Scott Runs 7.071/204.66, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.559/206.99, Was #5

The eight who will be in eliminations are now set, but they are running for pairings.

Both engines went sour around half track and neither improved.

Left Lane: Rickey House Runs 8.822/97.72, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.022/203.68, Was #7
Right Lane: Tommy Grimes Runs 7.370/153.46, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.541/247.29, Was #3

Both had promising starts, but House's header flames went away at half track and Grimes was out of power around 1,000 feet.

Left Lane: Doug Horne Runs 6.490/228.92, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.402/233.40, Was #1
Right Lane: Steve Dorn Runs 10.356/83.80, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.461/217.74, Was #2

Last pair. These two made the two quickest runs yesterday and those times held up through this session.

Dorn's engine went sour early, but Horne carried the front tire all the way to the stripe.

Doug Horne's incremental times: 60ft-1.226 sec., 330ft-2.992, 660ft-4.368/184.95 mph, 1,000ft-5.496.
