IRWINDALE, Calif. --
That's how Irwindale Event Center VP/GM explained Irwindale Dragstrip's participation in the 2013 NHRA Pacific Division "E.T. Challenge" series of four events that pay off with the overall winner taking home an authentic "Wally"* trophy, the most coveted reward in all of organized drag racing.
The all out competition will be among drag racers from seven states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah) at seventeen NHRA-sanctioned drag strips scattered across the organization's Pacific Division which is also proudly referred to as "NHRA's Magnificent Seven".
There are four classes of competition: Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, and Motorcycle and racers. The competition levels at these often races rival the tension and techniques seen at some of NHRA's top pro meets. Truth be told, these events are where many of the biggest names in pro drag racing first learned the art of leaving hard and keeping their car on the shortest route (that's the straightest one) to speed traps.
The points system gives everyone a chance, but highly favors consistency. "If you want a Wally, you're going to have to have good numbers at every one of these events," said Klein. "This is a short series; each race day is worth 25% of your points total ... You need to be sharp, spot-on every run. That's really why a win in the E.T. Challenge Series means so much to our racers."
Irwindale drag racers will be on site at Irwindale Event Center and running for a shot at a Wally on March 1, April 14, May 5, and June 9 in 2013 ... Sunday afternoons all. Fans are always welcome, and, just like the big guns; the NHRA Pits are open to the public with their admission ticket.
Drag racing is a real family motorsport, whether racing or watching, it's easy to understand, there's always action on the track, and everyone has a great time, cheering on their hometown heroes.
Gates open for each of the above Sunday events at 8:00am and the racing starts promptly at 10:00am. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 6 to 12, and parking is free. There's great concession food and beverages on hand, and exciting NHRA drag racing on the track!
