Top Alcohol Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By David Gerard

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Alcohol Funny Car at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Pacific Division, event at Firebird International Raceway listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Terry Ruckman Runs 5.751/257.09, Now #1

4:51 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 78 degrees, relative humidity 15 percent, barometer 28.99 inches, adjusted altitude 2,473 feet, track temperature 100 degrees.

Ruckman's Monte Carlo drives hard off the line and runs clean and straight to the finish line.

Left Lane: Charles McLaws Runs 5.660/257.92, Now #1
Right Lane: Nick Januik Runs 13.110/62.48, Now #3

Januik is all over the track at the hit, as the slicks are smoking and he is pedaling. He finally gives it up.

McLaws runs a career best ET and MPH to move into the top spot on the ladder.

Charles McLaws' incremental times: 60ft-0.982 sec., 330ft-2.533, 660ft-3.750/203.89 mph, 1,000ft-4.784.
Nick Januik's incremental times: 60ft-0.997 sec., 330ft-3.449, 660ft-6.414/073.49 mph, 1,000ft-9.719.

Left Lane: Brian Hough Runs 10.607/82.60, Now #4
Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.608/261.12, Now #1

Hough's slick start to shake about 200 feet out and he can't get it to recover.

Clean pass for Bartone, taking over the current top spot.

Tony Bartone's incremental times: 60ft-0.957 sec., 330ft-2.513, 660ft-3.719/206.13 mph, 1,000ft-4.742.

Left Lane: Annie Whiteley Runs 5.687/254.23, Now #4
Right Lane: Jay Payne Runs 5.685/256.65, Now #3

A great side by side pass for the two car.

Whiteley gets a little head start and the finish just 0.002 difference in ET. Payne gets the best of it.

Annie Whiteley's incremental times: 60ft-0.952 sec., 330ft-2.523, 660ft-3.749/202.58 mph, 1,000ft-4.797.
Jay Payne's incremental times: 60ft-0.971 sec., 330ft-2.542, 660ft-3.765/203.68 mph, 1,000ft-4.803.

5:02 p.m. Both cars go long in the shutoff area and need to be pulled back to the asphalt.

Left Lane: Steve Gasparrelli No Time, Now #9
Right Lane: Doug Gordon Runs 5.616/256.55, Now #2

5:07 p.m. Back to qualifying.

This started really well and then almost got BAD!

Gordon was away first fortunately and had better incrementals going down the track. It's a strong pass into the new number two spot.

Gasparrelli was right behind him at the 330 lights and then the Monte Carlo made a hard move right across his lane nailing the 660 reflectors. The car continues right across the right lane and just misses tagging the wall in Gordon's lane. He gets the car quieted down and ends the drama.

Doug Gordon's incremental times: 60ft-0.935 sec., 330ft-2.480, 660ft-3.699/203.34 mph, 1,000ft-4.735.

Bartone stays number one at 5.608 and Januik is on the bump at 13.110.
